Most of what makes the school run and the weekend grocery trip painless comes down to the right amount of car, and the Kia Seltos 2024 lands in that bracket for a lot of Dubai families. We rent it with 250 km a day included, so a normal week of nursery drop-offs, mall runs and the odd trip out to the desert sits inside the allowance without you watching the odometer. It's a compact crossover that gives you more room and more ground clearance than a hatch, without the running cost or the parking headache of a full-size SUV. This page is about whether that middle ground is the right call for you, and which version actually earns its keep.
The Seltos is a small SUV that drives like a tall hatchback, which is exactly why it works for daily Dubai life. At roughly 4.36 metres long it slots into a standard mall bay and survives a Marina multi-storey without the three-point shuffle a bigger SUV forces on you. You sit higher than you would in a sedan, the view over speed bumps and ramps is better, and getting a child seat in and out doesn't mean bending double.
The engine on our cars is the 1.6-litre with 123 horsepower, paired to an automatic and front-wheel drive. That's the sensible pick for this car and this city. It's no rocket off the line, but around town and merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road it has enough to keep up without drama. If you wanted a turbo that pins you back in the seat, this isn't that car, and most renters never miss it.
Five seats, and the rear bench is genuinely usable rather than a token gesture. Two adults sit comfortably behind two adults, and three across works for a school run with kids. The boot holds around 433 litres, which swallows a large suitcase plus a couple of soft bags, or a full weekly grocery shop with the pushchair folded flat. Drop the rear seats and you've got space for flat-pack furniture or a bike.
Where it gets tight is the airport scenario with a full house. Two large hard cases and a third adult in the back, and you'll be stacking bags on laps. For four adults plus a week of luggage heading to DXB or DWC, a sedan or a bigger SUV is the honest answer. For a couple or a small family, the Seltos has the room you'll actually use.
Park anything outside in a Dubai July and the cabin hits oven temperature. The Seltos cools a parked car down at a fair clip thanks to a compact cabin and decent front vents, and there are rear vents too, so kids in the back aren't left baking while the front seats get all the cold air. Give it a couple of minutes with the fan up and it's comfortable before you've cleared the car park. It's not a luxury climate system, but for this class it does the job.
A few rules worth knowing. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental get billed to you, so watch the speed cameras on the E11. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a child seat.
The 1.6 isn't thirsty for an SUV. Real Dubai driving, meaning a lot of stop-start city work and AC running flat out, will use more than the brochure suggests, but you're still looking at comfortable economy for the class. With a tank around 50 litres, a typical week of city errands and a couple of longer runs means filling up maybe once, twice if you're commuting Abu Dhabi-direction. For most renters it's a once-a-week stop, not a chore you plan your days around.

The roughly 190 mm of ground clearance is the quiet advantage. Steep mall ramps, aggressive speed bumps and the lipped entrances that make low sedans scrape are all non-events in the Seltos. You can take a hardpacked desert track or a graded road out toward Hatta without nerves. What it won't do is soft sand. This is front-wheel drive, not a 4x4, so dune bashing is off the table. For tarmac, light gravel and the occasional rough approach road, it's plenty.
Rent the Seltos if you're a couple or a small family who wants one car to handle the whole week: city errands, the school run, mall trips and a weekend drive out of town, with easy parking and a high seating position. It's the practical middle that most people actually need.
Size down to a hatchback if it's just you, you're parking in tight older buildings, and you want the cheapest comfortable city car. Size up to a larger SUV or a sedan if you're regularly carrying four adults plus airport luggage, or if soft-sand desert trips are the point of the trip. For everyone in between, the Seltos is the easy, sensible answer, and that's exactly why it books out.
