Want a small SUV that sits a little higher than the traffic without the price of a brand-new one? We hand over the Kia Seltos 2021 with 250 km a day already included, so a week of city errands and one or two airport runs rarely tips you into extra-mileage charges. This is the value pick in the compact-crossover bracket: an older model year at a softer rate that still gives a couple or a small family a raised driving position, a real boot, and a car that slots into Dubai parking without drama. The catch is honesty about a relaxed engine and a plainer cabin, and we'll get to who should size up.
The 2021 Seltos does the job most renters actually need a small SUV to do. You sit higher than you would in a hatch, the glass is generous, and judging gaps in a multi-storey or merging onto a busy road is easier for it. The 1.6-litre engine and automatic gearbox keep things calm in stop-and-go traffic, which is most of what Dubai driving really is.
What you give up by picking the 2021 over a newer year is mostly screen size and cabin trim. The plastics are harder, the infotainment is a generation behind, and you won't find the latest driver-assist tech. None of that changes whether the car gets you and your bags from the apartment to the terminal in comfort. If you want the newest cabin and the bigger screen, a later Seltos is there. If you want a sensible crossover at a lower rate, this is the one.

The 433-litre boot is the Seltos's quiet strength in this class. Two large suitcases and a cabin bag go in with the parcel shelf in place, which covers a couple flying in for a week or a family doing the weekly grocery haul. Drop the rear seats and you free up a long, flat load floor for flat-pack furniture or a bicycle. Three adults across the back is fine for a cross-town trip, less so for an hour on the highway, since the middle seat is firm and the floor has a slight hump.
For two adults and two kids with a week's luggage, the Seltos is comfortable. Add a fourth adult and a full set of airport cases and it starts to feel packed, which is the point where a Tucson or Creta earns its keep.
This is where the value trade-off shows. The 1.6 has 123 hp, and in town it's perfectly relaxed: smooth off the line, quiet at 60 to 80, and untroubled by speed bumps thanks to the 190 mm clearance that also keeps the nose clear of steep mall ramps. The DXB and DWC runs are easy, and the raised seat makes loading and unloading at the terminal kinder on your back.
Push it on the E11 and you feel the modest power. Overtaking at 120 needs planning, and a full car with the AC working hard will have the engine revving more than a turbo rival would. It cruises happily; it just doesn't surge. If your week is mostly highway miles between emirates with a loaded car, that relaxed engine is the honest reason to consider sizing up.
In a Dubai summer the cabin bakes, and the question every renter asks is how fast the AC recovers. The Seltos pulls a parked cabin down at a steady, dependable pace, and the rear vents matter if you're carrying kids in the back. It's a mid-size cabin, so cooling isn't instant after a long park in 45-degree sun, but crack the windows for the first thirty seconds and it settles quickly. The dark cloth seats get hot; a windshield sunshade is worth the few minutes it saves you.
A few local points to keep flat. You cover Salik tolls, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you, so watch the speed cameras on the E11. Seat belts are required in every seat, and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours, which we can fit on request.
Rent the 2021 Seltos if you're a couple or a small family who wants a higher view, easy parking, and a genuinely useful boot without paying for the newest model year. For city errands, mall trips and a couple of airport runs, it's the sensible value choice in the compact-crossover bracket.
Skip it in two cases. If you'll spend the week loaded with four adults and luggage on inter-emirate highway drives, the relaxed 1.6 will frustrate you, and a Tucson or Creta gives you the muscle and space. If it's just you and a partner doing short city hops and you don't need the height or the boot, a hatch costs less to rent and is even simpler to park. For everyone in between, the Seltos is the easy, fair-value answer.
