Say the name Kaiyi to most people picking up a car in Dubai and you get a blank look back. That's fair. The brand only reached the Gulf a couple of years ago, built by the same group that owns Chery, and the Kaiyi X3 2024 is still an unfamiliar badge wrapped around a compact SUV shape everyone already knows how to read. What isn't unfamiliar is what the unknown name buys you here: unlimited mileage on the rental, so there's no daily cap to track and no per-kilometre bill waiting at drop-off, and a minimum age of 21, lower than most SUVs in this class ask for. The badge is new. The terms are why it's worth a look anyway.
The X3 runs a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 156 hp and 230 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic. The torque number is the one that matters day to day. It shows up low in the rev range, so pulling into traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road with the AC working hard doesn't need a stab at the throttle the way a naturally aspirated small SUV does. Around town, where most rental miles actually happen, the turbo does the early work and the CVT just holds the engine where it's comfortable. Push it hard and the CVT does the usual CVT thing, where the engine note rises faster than the car does, but that's a highway-merge quirk, not a daily annoyance.
Front-wheel drive is the whole story here. There's no AWD version of this car anywhere in the lineup, and 158 mm of ground clearance is built for speed bumps and parking ramps, not for a Hatta trail. Treat it as a tarmac car and it won't disappoint you.

Four hundred and fifty litres of boot space is honest small-crossover territory: one large suitcase and a soft bag fit without a fight, but a third case is where you start rearranging things. A couple landing at the airport for a week fits easily. A family of four with a full set of hold luggage will end up with something on somebody's lap.
The back seat carries two adults comfortably on a normal trip, and the raised seating position that comes with any crossover makes it an easier climb than a low sedan. Three across is fine for kids on a short run to the mall, less fine for a long highway stretch with everyone's bags along too. At 4.4 metres long and 1.83 metres wide, the X3 slots into a Marina tower bay or a multi-storey mall slot without a wide-turn struggle, and the 158 mm of clearance handles the taller speed bumps and steep basement ramps that catch out lower cars.
The rental comes with unlimited mileage, which matters more than it sounds. There's no daily allowance to watch, no mental math before a day trip to Al Ain or Hatta's foothills, and no per-kilometre charge waiting when you bring the car back. Drive it a lot in a week and the number on the odometer doesn't change what you pay.
Running costs stay reasonable too. The 51-litre tank and a fuel average around 10 km per litre in city traffic, better once you're cruising the highway, mean roughly one fill covers two or three days of normal Dubai driving. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, as with any car here, and you need to be at least 21 to take the keys.
Parked in the sun on a Dubai afternoon, the cabin heats up the way any car's does, and the X3 has no trick to hide that. What works for it is size. A smaller cabin has less air to cool than a full-size SUV's, so once the AC is running the front vents pull the temperature down within a few minutes rather than a long slog. Crack a window before you climb back in on the hottest days, and use covered parking when it's there.
Rent the X3 if the unfamiliar name doesn't bother you and your week looks like solo driving, a couple's trip, or city errands and mall runs with normal luggage. The turbo engine gives it real pull in traffic that cheaper naturally aspirated small SUVs don't have, unlimited mileage removes the guesswork on longer days out, and the lower age minimum opens it up to younger renters who get turned away elsewhere. On a rental, a brand nobody's heard of carries none of the resale worry a buyer would take on. If something goes wrong, you call the desk and we send another car.
Look elsewhere if you're four adults travelling with a full week's luggage. The 450-litre boot and the back seat handle two people well, not four with cases for a whole trip. And if Hatta or any real off-road stretch is on the plan, this is a front-wheel-drive tarmac car with no AWD option anywhere in the range, so a proper 4x4 is the right call instead. For everyone else, the X3 does more than the badge suggests, arrives at your door within one to two hours of booking, and doesn't punish you for putting on the miles.
