Kaiyi X3 2023 - start from 114 AED / day

Compare specs before badges and the Kaiyi X3 2023 makes an odd case for itself. It undercuts the compact SUVs Dubai renters already default to, and it does that with a turbocharged engine most of them skip. A typical naturally aspirated small SUV in this class needs more revs to get moving from a standstill. The X3 puts a 156 hp turbo under a similar footprint for a lower daily rate, and it still arrives at your door in one to two hours like the rest of our fleet. This page runs the actual numbers against the familiar names you might be defaulting to out of habit rather than comparison.

Power on paper: the 1.5 turbo and how it drives

The X3 runs a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, 1,498 cc, rated at 156 hp and 230 Nm, through a CVT automatic to the front wheels. That torque figure is the one worth reading twice. It lands low in the rev range, so merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road with the AC on full doesn't take a heavy right foot, unlike a lot of the naturally aspirated small SUVs that share its price bracket and need to build revs first. Push the CVT hard for a highway overtake and the engine note climbs ahead of the actual speed, which is standard CVT behaviour rather than anything specific to this car. In ordinary city driving, where a rental spends most of its life, the turbo covers the early acceleration and the gearbox just holds things steady.

There's no AWD version anywhere in the X3 lineup, so front-wheel drive is the whole drivetrain story. The 158 mm of ground clearance is sized for speed bumps and parking ramps, not for a Hatta trail. Judge it as a city and highway car and the turbo genuinely earns its keep against slower rivals. Ask it for sand and it will let you down.

What fits: cargo, back seat and daily loads

Four hundred and fifty litres is a fair figure for this size of crossover, not a generous one. One large suitcase and a soft bag go in without any rearranging, and a third case turns into something balanced on a lap. A couple flying into DXB or DWC for a week of city driving packs into this comfortably. A family of four with a full set of hold luggage will run out of boot before they run out of bags, same as it would in most cars this size, regardless of badge.

The back seat suits two adults on a normal trip and three children across for a short hop to the mall. Push it to a highway run with a fourth adult and everyone's cases stacked around them and it gets cramped. At 4.4 metres long and 1.83 wide, the X3 slides into a Marina tower bay or a tight multi-storey mall slot without the wide-turn manoeuvring a bigger SUV forces on you, and the 158 mm of clearance handles the steeper basement ramps and taller speed bumps that scrape lower sedans.

Fuel bills, tolls and how the cabin handles the heat

The 51-litre tank and a fuel average around 10 km per litre in the city, improving on the highway, keep a week of driving affordable next to the known-name SUVs it's competing against on price. This rental includes 250 km a day. Run that full allowance in city traffic and you're looking at a fill roughly every two days, stretching out further with more highway miles. Go past 250 km in a day and the extra costs AED 0.5 per kilometre, worth working out before a longer trip out of town. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the rental fall to the renter, as with every car we hand over, and you need to be 25 to take the keys on this one.

Left in the sun on a Dubai afternoon, the cabin heats up the way any car's does, turbo or not, and there's nothing here to pretend otherwise. Its size works in its favour, though. A compact cabin has less air to cool than a mid-size SUV's, so the front vents bring the temperature down within a few minutes of the AC kicking in rather than a long wait. Give it a minute before you climb back in on the hottest days, and use covered parking whenever it's on offer.

The case for the X3, and where it falls short

Rent the X3 if you're cross-shopping it against a Creta, a Seltos or something with a name you already recognise, and the honest comparison comes down to price and pep rather than brand loyalty. This engine outpunches most naturally aspirated rivals in its bracket off the line, the running costs are modest, and a week of solo driving, a couple's trip or ordinary city errands with normal luggage suits it well. On a rental, an unfamiliar name carries none of the resale risk a buyer would be taking on, and if anything goes wrong, we replace the car.

Look at something else if you're regularly four adults with a full week of luggage between you. The 450-litre boot and the back seat are sized for two people travelling comfortably, not four with cases along for the whole trip. And if Hatta or any stretch of sand features in your plans, this is a front-wheel-drive tarmac car with no AWD option anywhere in the range, so a proper 4x4 is the right call instead. For anyone weighing this against a pricier compact SUV purely on the merits, the X3 holds up better than the badge suggests.
