Merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road with a full cabin is unremarkable in the good sense. The dual-clutch that hesitated on the ramp is smooth and quick once you are rolling, and at 120 the car is quiet and settled rather than busy.

It is tuned for comfort, not for pace. Overtaking a truck with seven aboard wants a little more planning than it does empty, and at 1,720 mm tall you feel a strong crosswind on an open stretch. Neither is a complaint at this money. The 200 mm of ground clearance means community speed bumps and steep ramp lips are a non-event, which is more than you can say for most saloons at the same rate.

One thing to be blunt about: the X70 Plus drives its front wheels only. There is no all-wheel drive here and no low range, so soft sand is not something to try in it. Graded desert roads and the run up to Hatta are fine. Dunes need a proper 4x4, and getting one recovered is an expensive afternoon.
