The Jeep Compass 2020 is the smaller, cheaper way to rent a Jeep in Dubai, sitting below the Grand Cherokee on the same fleet for anyone who wants the badge without the size or the running cost. We bring it to your door in one to two hours of booking, so you can size it up on your own street before committing to a week. Where the Grand Cherokee is built for a genuine day out to Hatta, the Compass is a front-wheel-drive city SUV, and that's the honest trade, not a hidden downside. This page settles whether that trade fits your week, or whether you actually need the bigger Jeep.
Every Compass 2020 in the fleet runs Jeep's 2.4-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder, 180 hp and 237 Nm sent through a six-speed automatic to the front wheels only. There's no four-wheel-drive version on this fleet car, whatever the badge might suggest, so keep the desert plans for the Grand Cherokee parked a few rows over and treat this as an on-road SUV that happens to wear Jeep's grille.
Around town that engine does its job without drama. It has enough pull off the line for roundabouts and mall ramps, and the automatic works through its six gears cleanly rather than hunting the way some smaller-engined rivals do. Sheikh Zayed Road is where the size shows. 180 hp moves a compact SUV to 120 km/h without strain, but ask for a quick overtake at that speed and the gearbox drops two gears to find it, so plan the move a beat earlier than you would in the Grand Cherokee's V6.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 2.4-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder |
| Power | 180 hp / 237 Nm |
| Transmission | Six-speed automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | Five |
| Boot | 770 L seats up, about 1,690 L with rear seats folded |
| Fuel economy | About 8.8 L/100km official, closer to 10 to 11 L/100km real-world city driving |
| Fuel tank | 51 litres |
| Range | Roughly 450 to 500 km on a tank in real city driving |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,394 x 1,874 x 1,645 mm |
| Ground clearance | About 200 mm |
| Colour | Silver |
The Compass seats five in one row of back seats, no fold-out third row hiding anywhere, so don't confuse this with the seven-seat Jeeps also on our fleet. Two adults in the back get real head and leg room for a compact SUV, and two child seats fit side by side without a fight over the middle buckle.
Boot space is the genuine surprise on this car. With all five seats up there's 770 litres behind the rear bench, more than most compact SUVs in this class manage, enough for a big airport suitcase, a carry-on and the soft bags without folding anything down. Drop the 60/40 rear seat and that opens to around 1,690 litres, plenty for a flat-pack shelf or a full week's shopping run. What it won't do is carry five adults and a full boot on the same trip. Four people and their luggage is the sweet spot. A fifth passenger usually means someone's knees meet a suitcase.
Size is where the Compass pays you back at the wheel. At 4.4 metres long and under 1.9 metres wide, it's noticeably easier to place in a tight multi-storey bay or a Marina ramp than the Grand Cherokee down the row, and around 200 mm of ground clearance clears the average Dubai speed bump and a steep mall ramp without a scrape. It's a tarmac car, so leave the graded desert tracks to the bigger Jeep.
Official fuel economy for the FWD Compass sits around 8.8 L/100km, call it 11.4 km per litre, and real Dubai traffic with the AC working hard nudges that closer to 10 or 11 L/100km. The 51-litre tank isn't huge, so plan on a fill roughly every 450 to 500 km of real city driving rather than stretching for a full week between stops.
The rental includes 250 km a day, and extra kilometres cost AED 0.5 each, so a normal week of errands, school runs and a mall trip or two sits comfortably inside the allowance. Push it with back-to-back highway days and it's worth doing the sum before you book. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, as with every car we hand over, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys.
Cabin cooling is where the compact size actually helps. There's less air to chill than in the Grand Cherokee, so the front vents pull the cabin down to comfortable within a couple of minutes of climbing back in after a few hours parked in July sun. This is a five-seat cabin without extra rear-vent ducting built for a third row, so the two back-seat passengers get cold air fast rather than waiting on it.
Rent the Compass 2020 if you want the Jeep name on a car that's actually sized and priced for city life: two adults or a small family, a genuine boot for airport bags, and running costs closer to a mainstream crossover than a full-size SUV. It's also the easier of the two Jeeps on this fleet to park, which counts for something on a Marina or JBR trip.
Look elsewhere if any part of your week wants four-wheel drive. That's what the Grand Cherokee on this same fleet is for, and no amount of styling on the Compass changes that it only drives the front wheels. A family of five with full luggage should size up too, since the back seat and boot both start to feel tight once every seat and case is in use at once. For everyone else, the Compass gets the badge without asking you to pay for capability you were never going to use.
