Jeep Cherokee 2020 - start from 460 AED / day

We hand over the Jeep Cherokee 2020 to your door in Dubai within one to two hours, so you can skip the rental counter and have a midsize SUV waiting wherever you are. This is the 3.2-litre V6 version, a roomy five-seater that does the school run and the supermarket car park as happily as it tackles a graded desert track on the weekend. Our argument here is simple. For families who want one car that feels planted on Sheikh Zayed Road, sits a bit higher than the traffic, and can still wander off the tarmac when the mood strikes, the Cherokee is a sensible all-rounder. It is not the cheapest SUV to run, and it is not a hardcore dune machine, and we will be honest about both.

What kind of SUV this actually is

The Cherokee sits in the middle. It rides on car-style underpinnings, so on the road it feels closer to a tall hatchback than a ladder-frame truck, which is what most Dubai renters want for daily use. The 271 hp Pentastar V6 with the nine-speed automatic gives it real pace when you merge onto the E11 or overtake a slow lorry near the airport. Power is never the problem here.

Where it earns its keep is the blend. You get a quiet cabin and light steering for mall parking, plus enough ground clearance and, on the AWD cars, a traction system that copes with light off-road work. Think compacted desert tracks, a beach access road, the run up toward Hatta. For serious soft-sand dune bashing you want a body-on-frame 4x4 with low range and aired-down tyres, and the Cherokee is not that. It handles the in-between honestly, and that covers most weekend plans.

Fuel, range and how often you will refuel

Here is the trade-off you sign up for with the V6. It is smooth and strong, but it drinks. In mixed Dubai city driving expect roughly 9.9 km/L, and stop-and-go traffic in the heat with the AC working hard will push that lower. With a 60-litre tank that gives a real-world range in the 540 to 650 km band, so a week of school runs, mall trips and the odd airport pickup means filling up once or twice depending on how far you roam.

If your week is mostly tarmac commuting and you care about the pump bill, a lighter four-cylinder crossover costs less to keep moving. The reason to take the V6 Cherokee is the easy power and the capability, not economy.

Space, boot and luggage

Five seats, and they are genuinely usable. Two adults up front sit high with a clear view over traffic, and three across the back is fine for kids or two adults on shorter hops. The boot swallows the weekly shop with room to spare, and for an airport run it takes two large cases plus soft bags without folding anything. Drop the rear seats and it becomes a proper load bay for flat-pack furniture or sports kit.

The one caveat is the seat count. This is a five-seater, full stop. If you are moving six or seven people, this is the wrong car and you should size up to a three-row SUV. For a couple, or two parents and two or three kids, the space is right.

Heat, cooling and the cabin in summer

A parked Cherokee in a July car park gets brutally hot, like any car here. The cabin is mid-sized rather than cavernous, so the AC pulls it down to comfortable within a few minutes of driving rather than struggling the whole journey. Front vents are strong, and the back seats get their own air, which matters with kids strapped in behind you in the afternoon. Park in the shade when you can and the first two minutes are far kinder.

Driving it around Dubai

On Sheikh Zayed Road and out toward DXB or DWC the Cherokee is in its element. It cruises quietly at highway speed, has the grunt to overtake without drama, and the higher seating gives a better read of the lanes. Around town the light steering makes Marina ramps and tight mall bays less of a chore than the size suggests, though at 1.86 m wide you still take multi-storey bays with some care.

The 185 mm of clearance clears the city's speed bumps and steep parking ramps without scraping, and it is the same clearance that lets the AWD versions handle light off-road tracks. Two practical notes: Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are the renter's responsibility, and seat belts are required in every seat with a child seat mandatory for under-fours.

Who should rent it, and who should skip it

Rent the Cherokee 2020 if you want one comfortable, capable SUV for a Dubai week that mixes daily family driving with the odd weekend off the tarmac, and you do not mind a thirstier engine in exchange for easy V6 power and a higher view. It is a genuinely good all-rounder.

Pick a four-cylinder crossover instead if your week is pure tarmac and fuel economy is your priority. Pick a body-on-frame 4x4 if you are planning serious dune driving, and size up to a seven-seater if you carry more than five people. For everyone in the middle, which is most families, this is the car we would hand you.
