The call we take most often on the first day of one of these rentals is about the gearbox. A driver joins a slip road, puts their foot down, and the engine settles on one steady note while the speed keeps climbing. They ring to ask whether something is slipping. Nothing is. That is a CVT behaving exactly as a CVT should. We rent the JAC S3 2026 in Dubai to drivers from 18, and we bring it to wherever you are inside one to two hours. What follows is mostly about the thing the listings skip, which is how this engine and this gearbox actually feel on Dubai roads.

The engine and gearbox set the whole character

There is a 1,590 cc petrol four under the bonnet, naturally aspirated, making 118 hp at 6,000 rpm. Ignore any listing that calls it turbocharged, because it isn't. The number that tells you more is the torque: 150 Nm, and it doesn't arrive until somewhere between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm. A turbo car hands you its pull from about 2,000 and feels eager off the line. This one wants revs before it gives you anything, which is why the CVT holds the engine high when you ask for a real overtake.

In traffic that pairing is genuinely pleasant. There are no gearshifts to feel, so crawling along in the evening queue is smoother here than in a cheap torque converter automatic. The car weighs 1,275 kg, which is light for something SUV shaped, so it moves off briskly enough at a green light even with the air conditioning working hard.

Out on Sheikh Zayed Road it holds 120 without complaint. Getting there takes around 11.5 seconds from rest, and passing a loaded pickup in the middle lane is a decision you make a few seconds early rather than on impulse. Push past 120 and the engine gets busy and audible, and a tall light body catches more crosswind than a low sedan does. None of that is a flaw in a car at this money. It only becomes a problem if your week is long fast runs between emirates with four people aboard.

What a normal week in it looks like

The same lightness that makes it feel willing off the line also keeps it cheap. JAC publishes no combined consumption figure for the UAE car. UAE listings put it near 5.9 L/100 km, which on a 45-litre tank works out around 760 km of mixed driving. City use in summer, with the compressor running most of the time, realistically lands closer to 7 or 8, and that still means one visit to a pump in an ordinary week. Our rate includes 300 km a day, with anything beyond that charged at AED 0.5 per kilometre, so school runs, mall trips and a couple of airport hops sit well inside it.

Physically it is easy to place. At 4.35 metres long, with a turning circle inside 5.5 metres and 155 mm of clearance at full load, it goes down an older mall spiral and into a tight bay without the three-point shuffle, and it clears speed bumps without that scraping noise. The high seat and deep glass do most of that work, which is why nervous drivers get comfortable in it quickly.

The SUV shape stops at the shape. It drives the front wheels on road tyres, so soft sand and rough tracks are off the table no matter what the badge suggests. Two costs also sit with you rather than us: Salik registers as you pass each gantry, and any RTA fine during the rental is passed on. Belts are required in every seat and children under four need a proper child seat.

Cooling a cabin that has been baking since morning

This is the part worth knowing before you book in July. The S3 runs a single front air conditioning system with no rear air outlets, and that is consistent across JAC's own equipment sheets. Leave it in an open car park at midday and the interior will be well past 45 degrees when you open the door. The front vents pull that back to something bearable within a few minutes of driving, faster if you drop the windows for the first minute and push the hot air out. It cools acceptably, not impressively.

The back seats are the honest caveat. Without dedicated outlets, rear passengers wait noticeably longer for the cabin to settle. If it is you and one passenger up front, this never comes up. Four adults in August is a different experience, and I would tell anyone booking on that basis to look at something with rear vents instead.

Who this one suits

Take it if you are a single driver, a couple, or a small family doing most of your driving inside the city, and you want a raised seating position and a big boot for close to hatchback money. On that brief it is good value, and the CVT makes the daily traffic crawl easier than the price suggests.

Look elsewhere if you regularly carry four adults through the summer, or if your week is dominated by highway distance where 150 Nm arriving at 3,500 rpm starts to feel like planning rather than driving. A Hyundai Creta or an MG ZS gives you more engine and rear cabin comfort for the step up. And if the height and the boot are not what you are paying for, a Grand i10 or an MG3 does the small car job for less. Those two things are the entire case for this car. They are also a better case than most people expect.
