Most people looking at the JAC S3 2025 in Dubai are really choosing between it and the JS4 that sits above it in the same range. We rent both, and we hand either one to drivers from 18, which most desks in this city will not do. The honest version of that comparison is not the one you would guess. The S3 is the smaller, cheaper car, and it still carries more luggage than its bigger sibling. What you give up is engine, not space. Sort that out first and the rest of this rental decides itself.
The S3 is a five-seat compact SUV running a 1,590 cc petrol four, 118 hp, front wheels, CVT automatic. It is not turbocharged, whatever a couple of UAE listing sites claim. Peak torque is 150 Nm and it turns up between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm, which is the naturally aspirated way of telling you that you have to rev it to get anything back. Around town nobody notices, because you rarely ask for half of it.
The JS4 one step up runs a 1.5 turbo, 147 hp, and 210 Nm from 2,000 rpm. That single line is the whole difference between the two cars. On paper it reads as 29 hp. At a green light with the AC on full it feels like more.
| Spec | Figure |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.6-litre petrol, 1,590 cc, naturally aspirated |
| Power | 118 hp at 6,000 rpm |
| Torque | 150 Nm at 3,500 to 4,500 rpm |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | 600 litres, about 1,100 litres with the rear seats down |
| Fuel tank | 45 litres |
| Fuel economy | about 5.9 L/100 km |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,345 x 1,765 x 1,640 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,560 mm |
| Ground clearance | 155 mm minimum, at full load |
| Kerb weight | 1,275 kg |
| 0 to 100 km/h | about 11.5 seconds |
This is the part that surprises people at handover. The S3 takes 600 litres behind the rear seats. The JS4, which is 65 mm longer and 35 mm wider, takes 520. Drop the 60:40 bench and the S3 opens out to roughly 1,100 litres of flat floor, which is enough for a flat-pack run or a bike with the front wheel off.
In luggage terms that means two large cases and a couple of soft bags for a DXB or DWC pickup, loaded properly, without anyone holding a rucksack on their knees. Very few cars at this price do that. The catch is the 2,560 mm wheelbase, which is short. Two adults in the back are comfortable for a run across town, and kids are fine anywhere. Put a third adult in the middle for the drive to Abu Dhabi and they will let you know about it.
At 4.35 metres long with a turning circle inside 5.5 metres, the S3 goes into Marina bays and older mall spirals without the three-point shuffle. The high seat and deep glass do most of the work. You can see the kerb, which is the whole reason nervous drivers and first-time visitors get on with this car so quickly. Ground clearance is quoted as 155 mm at full load, enough for Dubai speed bumps and the steeper ramp lips.
The SUV badge stops there. It is front-wheel drive on road tyres, so soft sand and rough desert tracks are not an option, and no amount of ground clearance changes that.
Cooling is the honest weak point, and it is worth knowing before August. The S3 has a single front air conditioning system and no rear air outlets, on both the current spec sheet and the older one. Park it in the open at midday and the front vents will pull the cabin back to bearable within a few minutes of moving, faster if you drop the windows for the first stretch. The back seats lag behind by a noticeable margin. For a driver and one passenger this is a non-issue. For four adults in peak summer, the JS4 has rear outlets and the S3 does not, and that is a fair reason to spend the extra.
The S3 will sit at 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road all day without feeling stressed. Getting there takes about 11.5 seconds from rest, and an overtake at that speed needs a bit of planning rather than a stab at the pedal. The CVT is smooth in stop-and-go traffic, which is most of what you will do here, but push it hard and the revs flare and hold while the car catches up. Above 120 it gets noticeably busier and louder, and at 1,275 kg with a tall body it moves around more in a crosswind than a low sedan does.
None of that is a fault. It is a budget car doing budget car things, and for city driving and airport runs it never runs short. If your week is mostly long fast stretches between emirates with four people on board, you are asking the wrong car.
JAC does not publish a combined consumption figure for the UAE car. UAE listings put it around 5.9 L/100 km, and on a 45-litre tank that works out near 760 km of mixed driving. Real Dubai city use with the AC fighting the heat lands closer to 7 or 8, which still means one fill in a normal week. Our rate includes 300 km a day and extra kilometres run at AED 0.5, so a week of school runs, mall trips and a couple of airport hops sits comfortably inside that.
Two costs land on you rather than us. Salik charges as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fine during the rental passes through. Belts are required in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat.
Rent the S3 if you are a solo driver, a couple, or a small family who want an SUV seating position and a genuinely big boot on the tightest sensible budget, and most of your driving is inside the city. On that brief it is the better buy of the two JACs, because you get more luggage space in a body that parks more easily, and the engine deficit barely shows below 100.
Move up to the JS4 if you regularly carry four adults, if summer rear-seat comfort matters, or if you want the turbo engine's flexibility for daily highway miles. You will trade away 80 litres of boot to get it. And if you never leave the city and do not care about the raised seating, a Grand i10 or a Picanto does the small-car job for less money. The S3 makes sense for the height and the space at close to hatchback money. Take away those two things and there is nothing left to pay for.
