What's under the bonnet, and how it drives

Under the hood sits a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four, good for 118 hp and 150 Nm. That torque peaks high, between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm, which is the naturally aspirated engine's signature rather than a turbo's low-down shove, whatever a stray listing might claim. Power runs through a CVT automatic to the front wheels only, so this is a tarmac car, not a Hatta or desert one. On the move that combination feels calm rather than eager. Pulling away from a light or nosing out of a tight parking bay is smooth and predictable, exactly what you want while threading Dubai car parks. Ask it to overtake a truck on Sheikh Zayed Road with four people and their bags aboard and the CVT holds a high note while the car gathers speed gradually. Plan the gap first rather than assume a quick burst.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

The reason people book this car over a similarly priced hatchback is the boot. With the rear seats up you get about 600 litres, comfortably ahead of a Hyundai Creta's 433 litres, and enough for two large suitcases standing upright plus the soft bags and duty-free without folding anything down. Push the rear seats flat and that opens to roughly 1,100 litres, enough for a flatpack run or a week of dive gear. The back seat itself is fair rather than generous. Two adults travel fine on a normal trip, three kids sit across for the school run, and a fourth adult back there on an airport haul with full luggage starts to feel tight.

The parking ease from the opening comes with one honest catch. Ground clearance is only 155 mm, low for something built like an SUV, so while normal speed bumps and mall ramps are no issue, the steepest basement entries in older buildings and the tallest speed bumps on service roads want a slower approach than the tall styling suggests.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

JAC has not published a combined fuel economy figure for the GCC-spec S3 that we would stand behind, so budget by the tank instead. It holds 45 litres, and our desk estimate for city driving, not an official rating, is roughly 450 to 500 km per fill. That means one stop most weeks and maybe two if you are covering more ground.

The mileage allowance is straightforward. You get 250 km a day included, which covers city errands, school runs and the odd airport transfer without you watching the odometer. Go past it and extra distance costs AED 0.5 a kilometre, so a full day out to Hatta or Al Ain is worth a quick sum first. Parked in the sun for a few hours, the cabin bakes like any car does in a Dubai summer, but the S3's size works in its favour. There is less air to cool than in a bigger SUV, so once you climb back in and the automatic climate control kicks in, the front seats come good within a couple of minutes. This is budget-tier cooling rather than the layered climate systems on pricier cars, so parking in shade or a basement bay when you can still makes the biggest difference on the worst afternoons.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the S3 if parking ease and boot space matter more than the badge on the tailgate. For a couple or a small family doing mall runs, grocery hauls and a DXB or DWC pickup with real luggage, it slots into tight bays that a bigger SUV would need two goes at, then swallows more than most economy cars once you are loaded up. The mechanicals are simple by design, a naturally aspirated 1.6 and a CVT with nothing unusual to go wrong, and on a rental the reliability question sits with us, not you. Size up in two cases. If your week is mostly highway driving with a full car, the 118 hp engine holds a comfortable cruise but needs room to build speed for an overtake, so a turbocharged rival will feel less strained at that pace. And if any part of the trip means Hatta trails, dunes or anything off the blacktop, this low-clearance front-driver is the wrong tool.
