A lot of renters shopping for an SUV in Dubai assume the extra height comes with an extra price. The JAC S3 2024 breaks that pattern. It's a genuine five-seat SUV, automatic gearbox, real ground clearance and crossover styling, priced closer to what you'd expect from a compact hatchback than from a Creta or Kicks. We deliver it to your door within one to two hours of booking and take debit card or cash at handover. For a renter working to a tight weekly budget who still wants to sit up and see over the traffic, that price gap is the whole argument for booking this one.

What you get for the money

Under the bonnet sits a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four, 118 hp and 150 Nm, sent through a CVT automatic to the front wheels. There's no turbo in this engine, whatever a stray listing might claim. Peak torque lands high, between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm, which is the naturally aspirated signature rather than a turbo's low-down shove. On the road that means smooth, unhurried progress rather than any real punch off the line, which suits stop-and-go city driving better than it suits a fast merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road.

The size is where the value shows. At 4,345 mm long and 1,765 mm wide on a 2,560 mm wheelbase, this is a proper compact SUV footprint, not a tall hatchback wearing crossover trim. What keeps the rate down is mostly the badge. JAC sells in the UAE through Al Habtoor Motors and doesn't carry the name recognition of a Hyundai or Kia. The mechanicals underneath are simple by design, a naturally aspirated engine and a CVT with little to go wrong, and on a rental the risk of an unfamiliar brand sits with us, not you.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

The boot is the number that makes the low rate look almost unfair. With the rear seats up you get roughly 600 litres, comfortably ahead of a Hyundai Creta's 433 litres and well past most hatchbacks in this price bracket. Two large suitcases stand up in there with room left for soft bags and the duty free, so an airport run for a family with real luggage doesn't mean playing suitcase Tetris. Fold the rear seats and the space opens to around 1,100 litres, enough for a flat-pack furniture haul or a boot full of beach gear.

The cabin stays modest, which is the honest trade for that boot. Two adults sit well up front with a raised view over the traffic, and the back seat handles two adults or three kids on a normal trip. Add a fourth and fifth passenger for an airport run with full luggage and the second row is where this car's size limit shows up, not the boot.

One thing the SUV styling hides is that ground clearance is only 155 mm, low for the shape. It shrugs off ordinary speed bumps and mall ramps at a sensible pace, but the steepest basement entries and the tallest bumps around some older buildings deserve a slow approach. At 1,765 mm wide it still drops into a tight multi-storey bay or a Marina tower slot without drama.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

JAC hasn't published a combined fuel economy figure for the GCC-spec S3 that we'd stand behind, so budget by the tank instead. It holds 45 litres, on the small side for the class, and our desk estimate for city driving, not an official rating, is roughly 450 to 500 km per fill. Expect a stop at the pump once or twice most weeks rather than going a fortnight between fills, though at UAE fuel prices that rarely adds up to much.

The mileage allowance is straightforward. You get 250 km a day included, enough for city errands, school runs and the odd airport transfer without watching the odometer. Go past it and every extra kilometre costs AED 0.5, so a full day out to Hatta or Al Ain is worth totting up in advance. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, standard across the fleet, and you need to be at least 21 to take the keys.

Heat works in the S3's favour here, in a small way. It's a compact cabin, so there's less air to cool than in a bigger SUV, and the front vents pull a baked interior down within a couple of minutes once the automatic climate control is running. Give it that head start before everyone climbs back in on a 45-degree afternoon rather than expecting instant relief. This is budget cooling, effective but not the layered, multi-zone kind a pricier car offers, so parking in shade or a basement bay still makes the biggest difference on the worst days.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Book the S3 if the arithmetic matters more than the badge. For a couple or a small family doing city weeks, mall runs and an airport pickup with real suitcases, it gives you SUV height and a genuinely useful boot at a rate that undercuts most of the small crossovers around it. The CVT makes stop-and-go traffic easy to live with, and the simple, naturally aspirated mechanicals mean less to go wrong on a rental car.

Size up in two situations. If your week leans heavily on the highway, with loaded overtakes or regular runs near 120 km/h, the 118 hp engine will feel strained and a turbocharged rival carries the same load with less effort. And if any part of the trip means Hatta trails, dunes or anything off tarmac, the 155 mm clearance and front-wheel drive rule this one out. That job belongs to a proper 4x4.

For everyone else renting by the number on the invoice rather than the name on the tailgate, the JAC S3 2024 is one of the cheapest genuine SUVs on the road in Dubai, and it doesn't feel like a compromise to drive.
