The decision worth making before you book a JAC S3 2024 in Dubai has nothing to do with the engine. It is about who sits in the back. This is a five seat SUV built on a footprint closer to a hatchback, and that footprint is the reason to rent it, because it parks where bigger crossovers have to shuffle and it still takes a week of luggage. We can have one at your door in one to two hours, with a no deposit option if you would rather not tie up a card limit. Get the passenger count right and the rest of this rental sorts itself out.
| Spec | Figure |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.6-litre petrol, 1,590 cc, naturally aspirated |
| Power | 118 hp at 6,000 rpm |
| Torque | 150 Nm at 3,500 to 4,500 rpm |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | 600 litres, about 1,100 litres with the rear seats down |
| Fuel tank | 45 litres |
| Fuel economy | about 5.9 L/100 km |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,345 x 1,765 x 1,640 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,560 mm |
| Ground clearance | 155 mm minimum, at full load |
| Kerb weight | 1,275 kg |
| Turning radius | 5.5 m or less |
At 4,345 mm long and 1,765 mm wide, the S3 slots into the older multi storey bays around the Marina and the narrower slots at the back of a mall car park without the reversing dance. The turning radius is quoted at 5.5 metres or less, so a U turn on a two lane road is one movement rather than three. Rear sensors and a reverse camera are fitted, though on a car you can see out of this well they are more reassurance than necessity.
Ground clearance is published as 155 mm at full load, which covers Dubai speed bumps and the sharper ramp lips into underground parking. It does not cover anything else. This is a front wheel drive car on road tyres, so soft sand and rough desert tracks are off the list no matter what the body shape suggests.
The boot is the part that catches people out at handover. There are 600 litres behind the rear bench, which is more than several larger crossovers manage, and folding the 60:40 seats opens it out to roughly 1,100 litres of near flat floor. Two big cases go in standing up with room for soft bags beside them. What you do not get is width across the rear bench. The 2,560 mm wheelbase is short, so two adults behind two adults is comfortable for a cross town run and three across the back is a favour someone is doing you.
The 1,590 cc engine makes 118 hp at 6,000 rpm and 150 Nm between 3,500 and 4,500. Naturally aspirated, no turbo, whatever a few UAE listing sites tell you. In practice that means the car has to be revved to give you its best, which almost never comes up in traffic and comes up immediately on a slip road. Nought to 100 takes around 11.5 seconds.
Once you are up to speed the S3 holds 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road without drama. An overtake at that pace works, but you want a gap you have already picked rather than one you spot late. The CVT deserves an honest word here. In stop and go traffic it is the best kind of gearbox, with no shift shunt at all, and under a hard right foot it lets the revs flare and sit there while the car gathers itself. At 1,275 kg with a tall body it also moves around more in a crosswind on the open stretches than a low sedan would.
JAC publishes no combined consumption figure for the UAE car. UAE listings put it near 5.9 L/100 km, which on the 45 litre tank works out around 760 km. Real city driving with the air conditioning working hard lands closer to 7 or 8, and that is still one fill in an ordinary week. Our rate includes 300 km a day and extra kilometres are AED 0.5, which a week of school runs, groceries and an airport hop stays well inside. Salik charges as you pass the gantries and any RTA fine during the rental passes to you. Belts are required in every seat and under fours need a child seat.
Neither of JAC's own spec sheets lists rear air outlets on this car, and that absence matters more in Dubai than most equipment on the list. Everything is fed from a single system up front. Leave the S3 in open sun at midday in July and the cabin will be brutal when you open the door, as any car here would be. The front vents pull it back to bearable a few minutes into the drive, and most of that recovery comes from moving rather than from sitting in the bay with the fan up, so start driving and let the airflow do the work.
Back seat passengers wait longer for that to reach them. Two up front with children behind on ordinary city trips is a non issue, and nobody complains from November to March. Four adults in a mid afternoon August rental will notice the gap between the front and the back, and it is the single most common reason someone regrets going this small in summer.
Rent the JAC S3 2024 if you are driving solo, as a couple, or with young kids, and most of your week happens inside the city. You get a raised seating position, a genuinely large boot and a car that parks itself into spaces that make bigger renters sweat, at close to small hatchback money. On that brief it is one of the easiest cars we hand over, particularly to visitors driving in Dubai for the first time.
Pass on it if four adults are in the car regularly, especially in summer, because the back row will run warmer and narrower than they want. Also pass if your week is mostly long, fast runs between emirates with a full load, where a torquier crossover such as the JS4 will feel calmer and comes with rear air outlets. And if the SUV height means nothing to you and you can live with a smaller boot, something like an MG3 does the city job for less. The S3 is worth renting for exactly two things, the height and the space, and both of them come in a body you can park anywhere.
