Plan a week that mixes daily errands with a proper trip out of Dubai, and most rental terms make you check a mileage cap before you book. The JAC S3 2023 skips that step. That torque figure lands late, between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm, which is the tell of a naturally aspirated engine doing the work rather than a turbo. A few listings still tag the S3 as turbocharged. It is not, and the way power builds on the road confirms it: steady and unhurried rather than an early shove. The CVT keeps the revs settled through roundabouts and stop-start traffic instead of hunting through gears, which is exactly the character you want on the school run or crawling through a mall exit.

Push it harder and the ceiling shows. Load four adults and a full boot, then try to merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road ahead of a fast-closing gap, and the S3 wants planning rather than confidence. It gets there, just not quickly. Drive is to the front wheels only, on road tyres, so this stays a tarmac car. The paved stretch out to Hatta is fine. The mountain trails and any soft sand past the town are not.

What the boot and back seat can actually take

Seats up, the boot holds around 600 litres, well past a Hyundai Creta's 433 litres and ahead of most hatchbacks that get shopped against it. Two large suitcases stand upright with room left for the soft bags, so a DXB or DWC pickup for a family with real luggage does not turn into a packing puzzle. Fold the rear bench and that opens to roughly 1,100 litres, enough for flatpack furniture or a boot full of camping gear ahead of a road trip the unlimited mileage is practically inviting you to take.

The back seat is fair rather than generous. Two adults sit fine on a normal trip, and three kids fit across for the school run, but add a fourth and fifth adult for a long airport haul with everyone's cases and knees start meeting the front seats. Ordinary speed bumps and mall ramps are no trouble, but the steepest basement entries and taller bumps around older buildings deserve a slower approach, since there is not much air under the nose. At 4,345 mm long and 1,765 mm wide it still slots into a tight tower or multi-storey bay without a second attempt, and U-turns on narrow service roads are easy for a car this size.

No mileage cap, the fuel picture, and cabin heat

The mileage terms are the actual headline here. There is no daily figure to track, no running total to watch against a pool, and no per kilometre charge waiting once you cross a limit, because this car does not have one. Spend the week however the trip demands it: city errands most days, a full day out to Al Ain or Hatta on the weekend, and the total distance never touches the bill. That is a real difference from most economy SUVs in this class, where a day trip out of the city means doing sums first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the rental are still the renter's responsibility, as on every car we hand over, and you need to be at least 25 to take the keys on this one.

JAC has not published a combined fuel economy figure for the GCC-spec S3 that we would stand behind, so budget by the tank instead. It holds 45 litres, and our desk estimate for city driving, not an official rating, is roughly 450 to 500 km per fill. Add a couple of longer drives into the week and expect two or three stops at the pump rather than one, a fair trade against never having to check an odometer.

On heat, the S3's compact cabin works in its favour. There is less air to cool than in a bigger SUV, so once you climb back in and the automatic climate control is running, the front vents pull the temperature down within a couple of minutes. Give it that short head start before pulling away on a 45-degree afternoon, and park in shade or a basement bay when you can. This is honest, budget-tier air conditioning rather than the layered, multi-zone systems on pricier cars, but it holds up for a Dubai summer if you treat it that way.

Where this car fits, and where it doesn't

Book the S3 if your week actually involves distance, city routines mixed with a real drive out of town, and you would rather not think about kilometres at all. Look at something bigger in two cases. If most of the trip is highway driving with a full car, the 118 hp engine holds a comfortable cruise but needs room to build speed for an overtake, and a turbocharged rival will feel noticeably less strained at that pace. If any part of the week means dunes, Hatta's mountain trails or anything off the paved road, the 155 mm clearance and front-wheel drive rule the S3 out no matter how much mileage is sitting unused.
