If you're going to cover a lot of ground without watching the meter, the JAC S3 2023 is one of the cheapest sensible ways to do it in Dubai. We rent it with 250 km a day included and no charge for the kilometres beyond that, so a week of daily commutes plus a couple of longer runs won't quietly inflate the bill. Pair that with the lowest fuel use in its class and you have a small SUV built around one idea: keep the cost of distance down. The S3 is an economy crossover in shape and seating height, not in power or polish, and this page is about whether that bargain holds up for the way you'll actually drive.
Two things make the S3 cheap to live with over a week. The extra kilometres don't add up against you, and the 1.6-litre engine is genuinely light on fuel. For a commuter clocking long daily stints on Sheikh Zayed Road, or anyone planning runs out of the city, that combination matters more than a slightly nicer dashboard would. You're not paying for refinement here. You're paying for a high seat, five doors and a low total cost, and if that's your priority the S3 is hard to beat at this end of the market.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Economy SUV, 5-door |
| Seats | 5 |
| Engine | 1.6-litre petrol, 4-cylinder |
| Power | 109 hp |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Fuel tank | 45 litres |
| Fuel economy | about 6 L/100km official; around 7 to 8 in real city use |
| Range | roughly 700 km on a tank |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4345 x 1765 x 1640 mm |
| Ground clearance | 155 mm |
| Boot | 600 litres |
This is where the S3 earns its keep. The official figure sits around 6 litres per 100km, and even in real Dubai traffic with the AC fighting the heat you'll stay in the 7 to 8 range, which is cheap. The 45-litre tank gives a usable range near 700 km, so on normal city use you're filling up about once a week, maybe a touch more if you're doing long daily highway commutes. Combined with the free extra kilometres, the cost of simply moving the car around is about as low as a Dubai rental gets. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you as the renter, so plan your gates and watch the cameras, but the petrol side of the week is genuinely light.
For a car this small the boot is the surprise. At 600 litres with the seats up it's larger than most rivals here, and it's the main practical reason to choose the S3 over a regular hatchback. Two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags go in without folding anything, so a DXB or DWC pickup for a family of four is comfortable rather than a packing puzzle. Drop the rear seats and you get a long flat floor for boxes or a bike. Rear legroom suits two adults easily and kids without complaint. Put a third adult in the middle for a long run and they'll feel it.
The 1.6 makes 109 hp, enough to move five people around town and merge onto a highway without drama. It'll sit at 120 on the E11 comfortably, and the AC keeps up. Ask for a hard overtake at the top of that range, or load it with five and a full boot, and the modest power starts to show, with wind and road noise climbing too since the soundproofing matches the price. For commuting and airport runs it's perfectly capable. For long high-speed cross-emirate drives with a full car, a torquier crossover is the calmer choice, but that's a different budget.
At 4345 mm long the S3 slots into Marina and mall bays without drama, and the tall glass and high seat make it easy to place on tight ramps and U-turns. The 155 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and the steeper mall lips without scraping, while staying low enough to feel planted. This is a city SUV with a city footprint, not an off-roader, so treat soft sand and rough tracks as off limits. For the daily reality of bays, bumps and reverse parking, it's one of the easier cars to live with at this price.
A parked car in a Dubai July can sit near 60 degrees inside, so cooling speed matters as much as anything. The S3 runs a single-zone front air-conditioning system, and it brings a hot cabin down to bearable within a few minutes of driving, quicker if you drop the windows for the first stretch to dump the heat. There are no rear vents, so back-seat passengers rely on airflow reaching them from the front. Two up front with kids behind on city trips stays comfortable. Load four adults on a hot afternoon and the back will lag the front noticeably, which is the kind of thing the spec sheet won't tell you. Seat belts are required in every seat, and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours, which we can fit on request.
Rent the JAC S3 2023 if your priority is keeping the cost of a week's driving down, you value the big 600-litre boot and the high seat, and you mostly drive in and around the city. With the free extra kilometres and the low fuel use, it suits a commuter, a single traveller, a couple, or a small family who want space and a commanding view without the running cost climbing. If you care about cabin quality, rear AC vents, quietness at speed, or you're regularly carrying four adults across the emirates, spend a little more on a Hyundai Venue or step up to a Creta. The S3's job is space and low cost, and at that job it does well.
