Chances are you have never driven a JAC, and most renters in Dubai have not either. The JAC S3 2023 comes from a brand that does not carry Hyundai or Kia's name recognition, and there is no getting around that. What tips the trade in the S3's favour is what comes with the rental: unlimited mileage, with no daily cap and no per kilometre rate to check, because none applies. The 1.6-litre engine, and where it runs out of breath

Open the hood on the S3 and you find a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four, 118 hp and 150 Nm. That torque figure lands late, between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm, which is the tell of a naturally aspirated engine rather than a turbo's low-down shove. A few listings tag the S3 as turbocharged, and none of them are right. Power runs through a CVT automatic to the front wheels only, so this is a tarmac car by design, not a Hatta or desert one. Around town that translates into a calm, unhurried step-off, ideal for stop-start traffic and mall car parks. Ask it to overtake a truck on Sheikh Zayed Road with four people and their bags aboard, and the CVT holds a note while the car gathers speed gradually. Plan the gap rather than force it, and the S3 does the job without fuss.

What actually fits: boot, back seat and luggage

The boot is where the S3 earns its keep against pricier rivals. With the rear seats up you get around 600 litres, well past a Hyundai Creta's 433 litres, enough to stand two large suitcases upright with the soft bags stacked beside them. Fold the rear seats and that opens to roughly 1,100 litres, enough for flatpack furniture or a week of dive gear. The back seat is fair rather than generous. Two adults travel comfortably on a normal trip, and three kids fit across the bench for the school run, but load a fourth and fifth passenger in for an airport haul with everyone's cases and knees start meeting the front seats.

One thing the SUV styling hides is that ground clearance is only 155 mm, low for something shaped this way. Ordinary speed bumps and mall ramps are no trouble, but the steepest basement entries and the tallest bumps around some older buildings want a slower approach, because there is not much air under the nose. At 4,345 mm long and 1,765 mm wide it still slots into a tight tower or mall bay without a second attempt, and U-turns on narrow service roads are easy for a car this size.

No mileage limit to watch, fuel by the tank, and staying cool in summer

Most rentals in this class cap you at a daily distance and start charging once you go over it. The S3 2023 does not. Mileage is unlimited for the length of the rental, so there is no daily number to track and no per kilometre rate to look up, because none applies here. The cabin's modest size works in your favour once summer hits. There is less air to cool than in a bigger SUV, so once you are back inside with the automatic climate control running, the front seats come good within a couple of minutes. Give it that short head start before pulling away in July or August, and use shade or a basement bay when you can. This is budget-tier cooling, not the layered climate systems of a pricier car, but it holds up for a Dubai summer if you treat it that way.

The renter this suits, and the one who should look elsewhere

Book the S3 if the freedom to drive without counting kilometres matters more than a familiar badge. For a family covering city errands, mall runs and a genuine week of exploring, Hatta one day and the airport run the next, the unlimited mileage removes the one variable every other economy SUV makes you calculate. The mechanicals are simple by design, a naturally aspirated 1.6 and a CVT with little to go wrong, and if anything plays up mid rental, you call the desk and we swap the car.

Look elsewhere in two cases. If your week is mostly highway with a full car, the 118 hp engine needs room to build speed for an overtake, and a turbocharged rival will feel less strained at pace. And if any part of the trip means dunes, mountain trails or anything off the paved road, this low-clearance, front-wheel-drive car is the wrong tool no matter how much mileage is sitting unused.
