Price is the headline, but the S3 earns it rather than just being basic. At 4,345 mm long and 1,765 mm wide it drops into a Marina tower bay or a mall multi-storey slot with room to spare, and U-turns on tight service roads are easy for a car this size.

The daily allowance is 250 km, plenty for city life, school runs and the odd airport transfer. Go past it and extra distance costs AED 0.5 per kilometre, so a full day out to Hatta or Al Ain is worth a quick sum first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are yours, as they are on every car here, and you will need to be 25 to take the keys.

One honest caveat on the "easy" part: ground clearance is only 155 mm, low for something styled like an SUV. It shrugs off normal speed bumps and mall ramps, but take the steepest basement entries and the tallest speed bumps gently, because there is not much air under the nose.

Space, boot and passengers

This is where the price tag stops looking like a compromise. The boot holds around 600 litres with the rear seats up, opening to roughly 1,100 litres folded, genuinely big for the class. City traffic and mall car parks are exactly where it feels right. Ask it to carry four adults up a Sheikh Zayed Road on ramp and you will plan the overtake instead of just taking it.

JAC has not published a combined economy figure for the GCC car worth repeating, so go by the tank instead. It holds 45 litres, on the smaller side, so a normal week of city driving means a stop at the pump once or twice rather than a fortnight between fills.

That same small size works in your favour in July. There is less cabin to cool than in a bigger SUV, and the front vents pull a baked interior down quickly once the automatic climate control is running. Give it a couple of minutes with the fan up before everyone climbs back in on the hottest afternoons, and do not expect the layered cooling of a pricier car. Budget cooling, done honestly, is still enough for a Dubai summer if you use shade and a basement bay when you can.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the S3 if you want the most crossover for the least money, you are doing city weeks, mall runs and airport pickups, and you do not need highway punch. Do not let the unfamiliar badge put you off either. The mechanicals are simple: a naturally aspirated 1.6 and a CVT, with nothing exotic to go wrong, and on a rental the reliability risk sits with us, not you.

Size up in two cases. If your trip means loaded overtakes on Sheikh Zayed Road or regular runs above 120 km/h with four aboard, a turbocharged rival will feel far less strained. And if any part of the week involves Hatta trails, dunes or anything off the blacktop, this low-clearance front-driver is the wrong tool. Book something built for that instead.
