It isn't the flashiest name on the lot, but it's a genuine five-seat SUV with an automatic gearbox, and nothing about the mechanicals gives us reason to hesitate before handing over the keys. We get it to your door in Dubai within one to two hours of booking, take debit card or cash at handover, and the daily mileage allowance covers a normal week without you watching the odometer. Engine, gearbox and how it drives around Dubai

Under the hood is a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder, 118 hp and 150 Nm, running through a CVT automatic to the front wheels only. That torque figure lands late, between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm, and that's the signature of a naturally aspirated engine rather than a turbo's low-down shove, whatever a stray listing might claim. On the road it means the S3 builds speed evenly instead of surging off the line, which suits stop-start city traffic and roundabouts better than a fast highway merge. Ask it for a loaded overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road with four aboard and the CVT holds a note while the car gathers pace gradually, so plan the gap rather than assume one.

None of this is exciting, and that's the point. A naturally aspirated 1.6 paired with a CVT is about as simple as a modern automatic gets, with little in the drivetrain to surprise you over a week or a month of driving.

How much the boot and back seat actually hold

The boot is where a car that costs this little quietly beats pricier rivals. Seats up, you get around 600 litres, well past a Hyundai Creta's 433 litres, enough to stand two large suitcases upright with the soft bags stacked beside them. Fold the rear bench and that opens to roughly 1,100 litres, enough for flatpack furniture or a full week of beach and dive gear. The back seat itself is fair rather than generous. Two adults travel comfortably on a normal trip, three kids fit across for the school run, but load a fourth and fifth passenger in for an airport haul with everyone's luggage and knees start meeting the front seats.

One thing the SUV styling doesn't tell you is that ground clearance is only 155 mm, low for something this shape. Ordinary speed bumps and mall ramps are no issue, but the steeper basement ramps and taller bumps around some older buildings want a slower approach, since there isn't much air under the nose. At 4,345 mm long and 1,765 mm wide it still slots into a tight tower or mall bay without a second attempt. Because it's front-wheel drive on road tyres, treat it as a tarmac car and leave the Hatta trails and any soft sand to something built for them.

Keeping it filled, and keeping the cabin cool

JAC hasn't published a combined fuel economy figure for the GCC-spec S3 that we'd stand behind, so budget by the tank instead. It holds 45 litres, and our own desk estimate for city driving, not an official rating, is roughly 450 to 500 km per fill. That's a stop at the pump once or twice most weeks, not a fortnight between fills, though at Dubai fuel prices that rarely adds up to much.

The mileage allowance is 250 km a day, which covers city errands, school runs and the odd airport transfer without you watching the trip counter. Go past it and every extra kilometre costs AED 0.5, so a full day out to Hatta or Al Ain is worth a quick sum before you leave. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, as with every car we hand over, and you'll need to be at least 25 to take the keys.

Heat is the part every rental car has to answer for in July and August, and the S3's size works in its favour here. There's less cabin to cool than in a bigger SUV, so once you climb back in and the automatic climate control is running, the front vents pull the temperature down within a couple of minutes. Give it that short head start rather than expecting instant relief, and don't expect the layered, multi-zone cooling of a pricier car. This is honest, budget-tier air conditioning, effective enough for a Dubai summer if you also use shade or a basement bay when you can.

Who this car works well for, and who should look at something bigger

Book the S3 if what you actually want from a rental is the least amount of thinking possible. For a couple or a small family doing city routines, mall runs and a DXB or DWC pickup with real luggage, it does the job without asking you to learn a new car's quirks first. The JAC badge isn't one most renters recognise. JAC sells in the UAE through Al Habtoor Motors, but on a rental the reliability question sits with us, not you. A naturally aspirated 1.6 and a CVT give us very little to worry about mid contract, and if anything does play up, you call the desk and we swap the car.

Look at something bigger in two situations. If your week is mostly highway with a full car, the 118 hp engine holds a steady cruise but needs room to build speed for an overtake, so a turbocharged rival will feel noticeably less strained at pace. And if any part of the trip means Hatta trails, dunes or anything off the paved road, the 155 mm clearance and front-wheel drive rule this one out entirely, so book a proper 4x4 instead. For a straightforward Dubai week built around city driving and a boot that earns its keep, the JAC S3 2023 is the sensible, low-drama choice, and that's meant as a compliment.
