On a week-long booking, the JAC S3 2023 is the car we most often get back with fuel still in the tank. That one desk observation explains most of why people rent it in Dubai. It is a five-seat compact SUV on an automatic gearbox, and we hand it over at your door within one to two hours, to drivers from 18, which most desks in this city will not do. What follows is not an argument that the S3 is a good car in the abstract. It is an argument that it is the cheapest week you can buy in something with a high seat and a genuinely useful boot, plus an honest account of where that stops being true.
JAC publishes no combined consumption figure for the UAE car, so treat any number you see quoted as an estimate rather than a factory claim. UAE listings put it around 5.9 L/100 km, which on a 45-litre tank works out near 760 km of mixed driving. Nobody gets that in July. Real city use with the air conditioning working hard lands closer to 7 or 8 litres per 100 km, and even then you are filling once in a normal week rather than the two or three visits a larger crossover asks for.
The small tank matters more than the economy figure does. Forty-five litres is cheap to fill even when you have let the gauge drop into the last quarter, so the running cost never arrives as a lump.
Our rate includes 300 km a day, and anything beyond that is AED 0.5 per kilometre. A week of school runs, mall trips and a couple of airport hops rarely comes close to that ceiling. You would need a daily Abu Dhabi commute before extra distance starts costing you anything.
Two charges sit with you rather than with us. Salik deducts as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fine raised during the rental is passed through.
| Spec | Figure |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.6-litre petrol, 1,590 cc, naturally aspirated |
| Power | 118 hp at 6,000 rpm |
| Torque | 150 Nm at 3,500 to 4,500 rpm |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | 600 litres, about 1,100 litres with the rear seats folded |
| Fuel tank | 45 litres |
| Fuel economy | about 5.9 L/100 km, not a JAC published figure |
| Range | about 760 km |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,345 x 1,765 x 1,640 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,560 mm |
| Ground clearance | 155 mm minimum, at full load |
| Kerb weight | 1,275 kg |
The boot figure is the second reason the phone rings for this car, and it holds up in practice. Two large cases and a couple of soft bags load in for a DXB or DWC pickup without anyone riding home with a bag on their knees. Drop the 60:40 bench and it opens to roughly 1,100 litres with a near flat floor.
What makes that unusual is the size of the car around it. At 4,345 mm long and 1,765 mm wide, with a turning circle inside 5.5 metres, the S3 drops into older multi-storey bays and tight mall spirals without the three-point shuffle. You sit high and the glass is deep, so you can see the kerb you are aiming at. That is why nervous drivers and first-time visitors settle into it inside a day.
The 2,560 mm wheelbase is what you give up. Two adults in the back are comfortable across town and kids are comfortable anywhere, but a third adult in the middle seat will start shifting around within twenty minutes.
Ground clearance is quoted at 155 mm minimum at full load, which handles speed bumps and the steeper ramp lips without a scrape. The SUV part of the description ends there. This is front-wheel drive on road tyres, so soft sand and rough desert tracks are not an option regardless of how tall the car looks.
The S3 cools from the front only. There are no rear air outlets, and that is not us hedging on trim, since neither official spec sheet lists them in any column.
For a driver and one front passenger it changes nothing. Leave it uncovered at midday in August and the front vents bring the cabin back to bearable within a few minutes of driving, quicker if you run the windows down for the first minute to push the worst of the heat out. Rear passengers wait longer, because the cold air has to reach them from the dashboard.
With kids in the back on a twenty minute city trip, nobody says anything. With four adults crossing town at three in the afternoon in August, someone will. Better to know that when you book than when we hand you the key.
Two things deserve saying plainly. The engine is a 1,590 cc naturally aspirated 1.6 making 118 hp, not the turbo a few UAE listing sites still print, and its 150 Nm peaks between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm. That combination is relaxed at 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road and distinctly unkeen about an overtake at that speed. The CVT is smooth through the stop-and-go traffic you will spend most of the week in, but ask for a sudden burst and the revs rise and hold while the car gathers itself.
Rent it if your driving is mostly inside the city, if you want the raised seat and the big boot at close to hatchback money, and if you are travelling alone, as a couple, or as a small family. On that brief it is very hard to beat on cost, and the fuel bill is the reason.
Skip it if you regularly carry four adults, particularly through the summer, or if your week is long fast runs between emirates with the car loaded. An MG ZS or a Nissan Kicks costs more per day and gives you back rear-seat comfort and an engine that answers faster. And if the higher seating position means nothing to you and you never carry more than one case, a plain hatchback will do the same week for less money. The S3 is worth renting for the height and the space. Remove those two things and there is nothing left you are paying for.
