Most small crossovers in this rate band ask you to give up the boot, the back seat, or both. The JAC JS4 2025 doesn't, and that's the reason to look at it. We rent it across Dubai with 250 km a day built into the day rate, enough to cover the school run, a Mall of the Emirates trip and a Marina dinner without watching the odometer. It seats five, sits you a little higher than a hatchback, and swallows a real week's luggage. This page is about whether that practical space, at a low price, makes up for a value-brand badge and modest performance, or whether you should pay a bit more for an established name.
The JS4 is a compact crossover, not a tall hatch pretending to be an SUV. At 4.41 m long it parks like a small car but gives you a 520-litre boot and a back bench that takes two adults in comfort, three at a push for short hops. The seating position is the part renters notice first. You sit up, you see over traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, and getting kids into seats doesn't mean bending double into a low cabin.
Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre petrol engine driving the front wheels through an automatic. It makes around 147 hp, which is fine for the job and no more than that. Off the line and up to city speeds it's smooth and unbothered. Ask for a hard overtake at 110 on the E11 and you'll feel it think about it for a moment. That's the honest trade for the price, and for most renters it never matters.
| Spec | Figure |
|---|---|
| Body | Compact crossover SUV, 5 seats |
| Engine | 1.5 L petrol |
| Power | 147 hp |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Boot | 520 L |
| Fuel economy | ~14 km/L city, ~16 km/L highway |
| Fuel tank | 55 L |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4410 x 1800 x 1660 mm |
| Ground clearance | 202 mm |
| 0 to 100 km/h | ~13 sec |
| Top speed | 180 km/h |
For a car this size, the boot is the headline. 520 litres takes two large hard cases standing up plus a couple of soft bags across the top, which is a genuine airport run for a couple or a small family. Fold the rear seats and you're past 1,000 litres, so a flat-pack run or a week's worth of bags for four becomes easy.
Compare that to the typical small hatch in this price range, where one big case fills the boot and the second goes on a back seat. If your trip involves DXB or DWC pickups with real luggage, the JS4 is the more honest choice. Four adults plus four full cases is still a stretch in any car this size, and for that I'd point you at a proper sedan or a larger SUV.
Park anything in Dubai sun and the cabin hits oven temperature. The JS4's air conditioning pulls a baking interior down to comfortable in a few minutes of driving, which is what you want, though the first minute with the doors shut is rough like it is in every car here. The back seat gets rear vents, so kids or passengers behind aren't left to bake while the front rows cool. On a 45-degree afternoon, run the AC on full for a minute with a window cracked before you set off and the cabin settles fast.
Visibility and the higher seat help in glare too. You're not squinting up at trucks from a low driving position, and the larger glass area keeps the cabin from feeling closed in.
This is where the JS4 quietly earns its keep. It's short enough for tight multi-storey bays and the awkward U-turns around the Marina, and the steering is light, so threading mall ramps and parallel spots is no drama. The 202 mm of ground clearance is the useful number here. Speed bumps in the older communities and the steep lips on some mall ramps don't make you wince, and you sit high enough to see the kerb you're easing up to.
On the open road it cruises calmly at 100 to 120. It's set up for comfort, not corners, so it leans a little if you push it through a fast sweeper, but for airport runs and daily errands that's the right balance. The 55-litre tank and roughly 14 to 16 km/L mean a tank stretches well past 700 km in mixed driving, so most renters fill up once a week, not twice.
Salik tolls run on your account during the rental, and any RTA fines from speed or parking cameras pass to the renter, so keep an eye on the limits on Sheikh Zayed Road. Seat belts are required in every seat, front and back, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can add when we deliver. None of this is JS4-specific, but it's the part visitors most often forget.
Rent the JS4 if you want crossover space, a higher seat and a usable boot at the bottom of the rate card, and you're driving mostly in the city with the occasional highway run. For a couple, a small family, or anyone doing airport pickups with real luggage, it does the job for noticeably less than an established crossover costs.
Look elsewhere if performance matters to you or you do a lot of fast overtaking on the E11, where the modest power shows. And if brand familiarity and long-term resale-grade refinement are what reassure you, an established small crossover like a Kia Seltos or Hyundai Creta is the safer pick, just at a higher daily price. The JS4's case is simple. You get more space and a higher drive for the money, and you accept a newer badge and ordinary pace to get it. For a lot of Dubai trips, that's a fair deal.
