Most renters who book the JAC JS4 2024 have never heard the badge before, and that's a fair reason to pause before you hand over a card. JAC is a Chinese state-backed manufacturer that's been building cars for decades, just not ones that show up often on Dubai roads yet, and the JS4 is its compact SUV entry in a class usually ruled by Kia and Hyundai. We deliver it to your door within one to two hours, so you can weigh it up without a desk visit eating your afternoon. The argument for renting past the unfamiliar name comes down to two things this SUV does better than its price suggests: a turbocharged engine with real pull, and a boot that outsizes the class.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder (1,499 cc) |
| Power | 147 hp / 210 Nm |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | about 520 litres seats up, up to around 1,050 litres folded |
| Fuel tank | 50 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,410 x 1,800 x 1,660 mm |
| Ground clearance | 150 mm |
| Colour | Grey |
The badge is unfamiliar, but the engine underneath isn't a mystery. It's a 1.5-litre turbo four making 147 hp and 210 Nm, and that torque figure holds flat from 2,000 rpm, which is what a turbo does and a naturally aspirated engine doesn't. Some listings elsewhere mislabel this as an NA unit; drive it and the difference shows immediately. Pull away from a light and the JS4 doesn't need you to bury the pedal, because the boost is already doing the early work.
The CVT is the one thing to set expectations around. Ask for a hard launch and the engine note climbs ahead of the road speed, a trait every CVT shares. Around town it barely registers, since the turbo covers most of what you need before the revs build. Settle onto Sheikh Zayed Road at 120 and the JS4 cruises there without strain, which is the more useful test for a Dubai rental than a 0 to 100 number. It's not a quick car by any measure, but it never feels like it's struggling to keep up with faster traffic either.
This is where the JS4 quietly beats cars that cost more to rent. With the rear seats up, the boot holds about 520 litres, enough for two large suitcases and a soft bag without folding anything down, which makes a DXB or DWC airport run genuinely comfortable. Drop the 60/40 bench and that opens to roughly 1,050 litres, useful for flatpack furniture or a bike run.
The back seat itself takes two adults in real comfort or three kids across for the school run and weekend outings. Load a fourth adult back there along with everyone's luggage and it tightens, which is the honest limit of any five-seater at 4.4 metres long. Up front, the raised seating gives you the higher view that draws people to a crossover over a hatchback in the first place.
At 4.41 metres the JS4 drops into mall and tower parking bays without the reversing dance a full-size SUV needs. One caveat worth knowing before a booking: at 150 mm, ground clearance is modest for something with SUV styling, lower than rivals like the Kia Seltos or Hyundai Creta. It clears normal speed bumps fine, but take the tall ones and steep basement ramps slowly and at an angle. This is also front-wheel drive on road tyres, so it belongs on tarmac. Point it at soft sand and it will dig in; for Hatta trails or dunes, you want a proper 4x4 instead.
JAC hasn't published an official combined fuel economy figure for the GCC JS4, so treat any single km/L claim online with suspicion. What's fixed is the 50-litre tank, which our desk experience puts at somewhere near 500 km of city driving per fill, roughly one stop a week on a normal commute. The number that actually decides your bill is the mileage allowance rather than the fuel: this rental comes with 250 km included per day, and every kilometre past that is AED 0.5. City errands and school runs won't come close, but a day trip out to Hatta and back is worth a quick check of the odometer before you leave. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, standard across every car we hand out, and you'll need to be at least 25 to take the keys on this one.
Heat is a real rental question in Dubai, not a footnote. Leave the JS4 parked in the July sun and the cabin bakes like any car would, but this is a mid-size interior rather than a cavernous one, so the front vents pull it down to bearable within a few minutes of climbing back in. On a 48-degree afternoon that's the gap between usable and miserable, and the JS4 lands on the right side of it. Park in shade when you can and it stops being worth thinking about. The controls inside are straightforward physical dials rather than anything trying to look premium, which suits a budget SUV fine.
Book the JS4 2024 if the badge doesn't bother you and you want genuine SUV space with turbo pull at a price below what a Seltos or Creta commands. Couples running between malls and the airport, small families with kids and their gear, and anyone tired of naturally aspirated budget crossovers running out of breath on a highway on-ramp are the right fit here. On the trust question, the honest answer is that reliability risk on a rental sits with us, not with you. If something plays up during your week, you call the desk and we swap the car, so the unfamiliar name matters less than it would if you owned it outright.
Size up to a mid-size SUV or a seven-seater if you're regularly running four adults with a full boot of luggage, since the back row and the 520-litre boot both tighten under that load. And skip it altogether if your plans include sand tracks or Hatta trails, because the front-wheel drive and 150 mm of clearance keep this one strictly on the blacktop. For a week of city driving, mall runs and airport pickups, though, the JS4 does more for the money than its badge lets on.
