For a week of Dubai city driving, the JAC JS4 2024 is one of the cheapest compact crossovers to keep fed, and that running cost is the heart of its appeal. It's a five-seat petrol SUV that sips fuel around town, parks like a small car and gives you the higher seat people want without the bigger-SUV rate. We deliver it to your door inside one to two hours and rent it from age 18, where many desks make you wait until 21. The argument is simple: if you want a frugal, easy-to-place family crossover for school runs, errands and airport hops, the JS4 does the lot for less. If you need to seat five adults with full luggage, or you're heading for sand, size up, and we'll explain where the line is.
The JS4 runs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol through a CVT automatic to the front wheels. The turbo matters most off the line and on slip roads, where it pulls cleanly up to traffic speed without the strain of a non-turbo 1.5. Around town the real reward is economy. Realistic city consumption sits near 8 to 10 km/L in Dubai stop-and-go with the AC running flat out, which keeps the week's fuel bill low.
The 50-litre tank then stretches that into a usable range, comfortably past 500 km of mixed driving on a fill. For most renters that means topping up once across a normal week, and petrol is cheap here, so the daily cost of running this crossover stays among the lowest in its class.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Economy compact crossover SUV, 5-door |
| Seats | 5 |
| Engine | 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol |
| Power | 147 hp |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Fuel tank | 50 litres |
| Fuel economy | About 8 to 10 km/L in city use |
| Range | Roughly 600 km per tank |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4410 x 1800 x 1660 mm |
| Ground clearance | 150 mm |
| Boot | 520 litres, up to 1050 with seats folded |
| Colours | White, Black, Red, Grey, Blue |
The 520-litre boot is genuinely useful, not a token cargo slot. Two large suitcases plus a couple of soft bags go in without folding the rear seats, so a family of four heading to the airport for a week away is covered. Drop the back seats and you free up to 1,050 litres of flat space, enough for a stroller, a cooler and a weekend's shopping at once.
Up front and in the back, two adults and two kids is the sweet spot, and child seats clip in easily for the under-fours the RTA requires them for. Three adults across the rear is fine for a 20-minute hop across town and tight for the hour to Abu Dhabi. If you regularly carry five adults plus all their bags, this is the moment to step up to a mid-size SUV.
At 4.41 metres long the JS4 drops into Marina and mall bays without drama, and the reversing camera takes the guesswork out of tight multi-storey spots. The light steering makes U-turns and supermarket car parks easy. With 150 mm of ground clearance it clears Dubai's speed bumps and steep mall ramps without trouble, though take the most aggressive ones with a little care rather than at speed.
That clearance is for confident tarmac driving, not the dunes. The JS4 is a front-drive crossover with no four-wheel-drive option, so keep it on the road and leave Hatta trails and soft sand to a proper 4x4. On Sheikh Zayed Road it cruises at 120 happily enough, with a usable shove for overtaking. Push hard above that and the CVT lets the engine drone, a reminder you're in a value crossover rather than a planted, quiet one. For airport hops to DXB or the longer pull to DWC, it's perfectly comfortable.
A parked JS4 in July gets brutal, same as anything here. The upside is the compact cabin, which the air conditioning pulls down quickly once you're moving, usually within a few minutes from a baking start. The front vents are strong. There are no dedicated rear vents on this trim, so back-seat passengers rely on airflow reaching them, which is fine in a cabin this size but worth knowing if you're carrying kids on long midday drives. Park in shade where you can and the first two minutes are far less of an ordeal.
The kit is the pleasant surprise. A large central touchscreen, a digital driver display, a reversing camera and decent seat space put the JS4 ahead of where a budget badge usually sits. For a family used to a base-trim Japanese rental, it often feels like a step up rather than a compromise, and on a week's booking the brand's unfamiliarity costs you nothing.
Two running costs are on the renter. The JS4 carries a Salik tag, so every toll passes to you as you cross the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental do too. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat. None of that is JS4-specific, but it's the part of the bill people overlook.
Rent the JS4 if you're a value-minded driver or a family who wants higher seating, a real boot and modern screens at the lowest sensible price, and you don't mind a badge that's new to you. For a week's rental the unfamiliar name costs nothing, while the kit, the space and the low fuel bill save you plenty over the established crossovers.
Skip it if you want the reassurance of a Toyota or Hyundai badge for a long booking, or you regularly need to seat five adults with full luggage, where a mid-size SUV makes more sense. And if your week involves real desert driving, this front-drive crossover isn't the tool. For everyone else doing school runs, mall trips, airport pickups and the occasional highway stretch, the JS4 is one of the best-value family crossovers we can put on your driveway.
