The call we field most often after a JAC JS4 2024 delivery is about a green light on the dash. A driver stops at a signal, the brakes stay clamped on their own, and they ring us convinced something has broken. Nothing has. That is auto hold doing its job, and it tells you what this car was built around: sitting in Dubai traffic without wearing the driver out. We hand these over to drivers from 18, which most desks here will not do, and one can be with you inside two hours. Book it for the load space and the city manners. Do not book it expecting pace.

Quick at 40, ordinary at 120

The engine is a 1.5-litre turbo, 1,499 cc, making 147 hp and 210 Nm through a CVT to the front wheels. The figure that really explains how it feels sits elsewhere on the spec sheet, though. At 1,365 kg the JS4 is light for something this tall, so those 147 horses have noticeably less to haul around than the SUV shape leads you to assume. Pull away from a signal and it goes with a bit of snap.

The CVT suits that low-speed brief well. There is no gearchange to wait on and no shunt when you lift and reapply in a crawling queue, just a smooth pull. Above 100 you meet the other half of the bargain. Ask for a decisive overtake on the E11 and the revs climb well ahead of the actual acceleration, and the car takes its own time about gathering speed. Top speed is a quoted 170 km/h, which is academic. Settle at 110 to 120 and it cruises quietly enough for a run down the coast.

Be clear on one point before you book. No four-wheel-drive JS4 has been sold in this market. It is front wheels only whatever the ride height implies, and anything deeper than firm graded track will strand it. If a dune camp is on your itinerary, take a real 4x4 instead.

The 435 kg you are actually allowed to carry

Do the subtraction the brochure invites and you get the most useful number on the car. Gross vehicle weight is 1,800 kg and kerb weight is 1,365 kg, so the JS4 is rated to carry 435 kg of people and cargo. Five adults of ordinary build account for most of that on their own, which leaves very little for everything else. This is a five-seater that works properly as a four-seater with luggage, and we watch the difference play out every time a group of five loads up for a weekend.

Take one person out of the equation and the picture changes completely. The boot holds 520 litres with the bench upright, far more than the economy hatchbacks that rent for similar money, and it takes two large hard cases plus soft bags without anyone folding a seat. Drop the 60:40 rear bench and you are close to 1,050 litres, which covers furniture runs and bulky sports kit. The 2,620 mm wheelbase gives the back row real legroom rather than a token perch.

Ramps, speed bumps and multi-storey bays

Suspension is MacPherson struts at the front with a torsion beam at the back, the usual arrangement at this price, and it behaves as you would expect. Sharp expansion joints and the harder residential speed bumps come through the cabin rather than being smothered. The 215/50 R17 tyres play their part, since a 50-series sidewall on a 17-inch alloy leaves less cushion than a taller tyre would. None of it is uncomfortable. It simply is not plush.

Clearance handles the job. JAC quotes a minimum of 150 mm measured at full load, so mall ramps and community bumps pass underneath without contact even with the car loaded.

Parking is where the standard kit earns its money. At 4,410 mm long and 1,800 mm wide the JS4 is no monster, but it is wider than the hatch you may have priced against it, and older tower basements are unforgiving. A 360-degree camera and rear sensors mean you place the car by the screen rather than guessing at your mirrors. Salik charges run to your account, any RTA fine issued during the hire passes to you, and a child under four needs a proper seat, which we fit before delivery.

Cooling it down in August

Left in an open bay through a summer afternoon, the JS4 bakes like anything else carrying this much glass. What decides whether that matters is the ventilation, and JAC got this right. The air conditioning is automatic and there are rear air outlets, which is not standard practice at this end of the market. With a child seat behind the driver in August, cold air arriving directly instead of drifting back from the front is the difference between a calm twenty minutes and a miserable one.

The physics still apply. Windows down for the first thirty seconds to push the trapped air out, fan on hard, and the cabin is properly comfortable two or three minutes into the drive. Park underground wherever the building offers it.

On fuel we will not quote you a consumption figure, because JAC's UAE material does not publish one and the third-party numbers contradict each other badly. What the fleet tells us is that the 50-litre tank covers an ordinary city week on a single fill, with a second stop if you are commuting daily or heading out of the emirate. Mileage runs at 300 km a day and city use rarely goes near it, with anything beyond charged at AED 0.5 per kilometre.

Who we would hand the keys to

Rent the JAC JS4 2024 if you want SUV height, a big boot and a well-equipped cabin on an economy budget, and your driving is mostly urban with the occasional highway run. New arrivals kitting out an apartment get a lot out of it. So do couples and small families who care about the boot rather than the badge, and it is one of very few cars in this class we can put an 18-year-old into with a year of licence behind them.

Two situations should send you elsewhere. If five of you are travelling with luggage, that 435 kg payload is telling you something real, and a mid-size SUV like a Kia Sportage is the honest answer rather than a hopeful one. And if you are the sort of driver who notices a gearbox thinking, the CVT will grate on you inside a week, so ask us for something with a conventional automatic when you book. Outside those two cases the JS4 does the ordinary Dubai week cheaply, quietly and with more room than the rate suggests.
