The SUV badge on this JAC JS4 2023 promises more ground clearance than the car actually rides on, and that's the first thing to settle before booking it for a Dubai week. We hand it over at your door within one to two hours, no desk stop required. Underneath the crossover styling sits a front-wheel-drive chassis on 150mm of clearance, a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine that pulls harder than the badge suggests, and a boot that beats most cars in its price band. This page weighs that trade, real turbo pull and real boot space against a modest ride height, against what your week actually needs.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder (1,499 cc) |
| Power | 147 hp / 210 Nm |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | about 520 litres (up to ~1,050 folded) |
| Fuel tank | 50 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,410 x 1,800 x 1,660 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,620 mm |
| Ground clearance | 150 mm |
| Colour | White |
The JS4 wears the crossover look Dubai renters expect: a raised roofline, wheel-arch cladding, a seating position that sits you above the traffic. Underneath, it rides on 150mm of ground clearance, modest for something styled like an SUV and noticeably less than a Seltos or Creta offer. It's front-wheel drive only. No JS4 trim sold in the GCC comes with all-wheel drive, so weigh any comparison to a proper 4x4 as marketing rather than mechanics.
That compact footprint pays off in the city. At 4.41 metres nose to tail, it drops into tower and mall bays without demanding the extra back and forth a bigger SUV needs, and it shrugs off ordinary speed bumps without drama. Tall humps and steep basement ramps are the exception; take those slowly and at an angle, the way you would in a low sedan. If Hatta or the dunes are on the itinerary, book a proper 4x4 instead. This one belongs on tarmac.
Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbo four making 147 hp and 210 Nm, and that torque holds flat from 2,000 rpm through to 4,500. Badge it "naturally aspirated" the way a few spec listings still do, and you'd be wrong: a flat torque curve starting that low in the rev range is a turbo signature, and it's obvious the moment the car pulls away from a stop without you burying the throttle.
The gearbox is a CVT, so ask for full acceleration and the engine note climbs ahead of road speed, the usual CVT habit. It rarely matters here, since the turbo has already done the early work by the time the revs flare. Settle onto Sheikh Zayed Road at the 120 limit and the JS4 cruises rather than strains, comfortable overtaking without forcing you to plan the move three cars back.
With the rear seats up, the boot holds about 520 litres, room for two large check-in cases and a soft bag without folding anything down. That covers a DXB or DWC airport run without a second thought. Drop the 60/40 bench and it opens to roughly 1,050 litres, enough for flatpack furniture or a bike with the front wheel off.
The back seat carries three children across comfortably, or two adults without complaint. Add a fourth adult and everyone's luggage and it tightens, which is where most compact SUVs this size run out of room, not a fault unique to the JS4. Up front, the raised hip point gives you the higher view people rent a crossover for in the first place, so for a couple or a small family the space outperforms the price.
JAC hasn't published an official combined fuel economy figure for the GCC JS4, so treat any specific km/L claim online as a guess rather than a manufacturer number. The fixed figure is the 50-litre tank, good for somewhere near 500 km of city driving, roughly one fill a week on a normal commute. What actually shapes your bill is the mileage allowance. You get 250 km a day included, and every kilometre past that costs AED 0.5, so a day trip out to Hatta and back is worth checking the odometer for, while school runs and mall errands won't come close. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are yours to cover, as with any car we hand over.
This particular JS4 is white, which helps a little with a car left parked under the midday sun since light paint reflects more heat off the body than a dark colour would over a long park. It's a modest effect, not a dramatic one. The cabin itself is mid-sized rather than cavernous, so the front vents pull a baked interior down to bearable within a few minutes of climbing back in, and parking in shade when you can makes the whole question disappear.
Rent the JS4 2023 if you want real turbo pull and a boot that beats the economy-SUV class, and the unfamiliar Chinese badge doesn't put you off. It suits couples splitting their week between malls and the airport, and small families who need the space more than a familiar logo on the tailgate. If it develops a fault mid-week, that's on us to sort, not a risk you're carrying by signing for a less familiar name.
Four adults travelling with full-size luggage will feel the pinch here; a mid-size SUV or a seven-seater carries that load with room to spare, so size up if that's your week. Skip it altogether if dunes or Hatta trails are the plan. The FWD layout and 150mm of clearance mean this one stays on paved roads no matter how capable it looks parked outside your building. You'll need to be 25 to take the keys, and we'll have them with you inside two hours of booking.
