Jac Js4 2023 - start from 159 AED / day

Most people reach this page having already ruled out a hatchback, so the decision is not whether to take an SUV but which cheap one. Rent a JAC JS4 2023 in Dubai and you are picking it over a Haval Jolion, a Chery Tiggo or a Nissan Kicks at broadly similar money, which is a closer call than the badges suggest. Our rate includes 300 km a day, enough for a week of errands with a run out of the emirate on top. What settles it in the JS4's favour is space and equipment. What settles it against is the drivetrain. Whether that trade works depends entirely on how you spend the week.

The shortlist it is actually on

The JS4 is JAC's compact SUV: a 1.5-litre turbocharged four of 1,499 cc, 147 hp, 210 Nm, driving the front wheels through a CVT. On paper that is unremarkable for the bracket, and that is rather the point. Nothing here is trying to outrun the competition.

Where it separates itself is the kit. Two 10.25-inch screens, one for the instruments and one for the centre stack, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 360-degree camera backed by rear parking sensors. Cruise control, auto hold, hill start assist, ISOFIX points, a smart key with push button start, six speakers. Some of that is normal at this daily rate and some of it, the overhead camera especially, is not. Anyone who has shopped this end of the market knows how often the cheapest SUV on the list turns out to have a reversing camera you squint at.

The other separator is the boot, and that one is not close.

Where the extra metal goes

520 litres behind the rear seats, and close to 1,050 with the 60:40 bench dropped. That is the figure that wins the comparison, because the compact SUVs renting alongside it mostly sit a long way under, and the gap only announces itself when you have four people and four cases rather than three of each. Two large hard cases stand upright with room beside them for soft bags.

The cabin supports the argument. A 2,620 mm wheelbase gives adults genuine rear legroom, so nobody behind the driver is negotiating for it. Width is where you should stay realistic. At 1,800 mm across, the back bench is a two-adult bench for anything longer than a cross-town hop, and two child seats plus one adult is the honest three-across picture.

Summer is the other place we would tell you to read the rival's spec sheet as closely as this one. The JS4 has automatic air conditioning with rear air outlets. A lot of cars at this money give the back seat no vents at all and leave cold air to find its own way there through the gap between the front seats, which is slow, and stops working entirely once a child seat fills that gap. The JS4 is tall and glassy, so one left in an open bay through a July afternoon still wants a few minutes of driving before it is properly comfortable. It just gets there evenly, front and back, instead of cooling the driver first and everyone else eventually.

What you give back on the road

The torque figure is the honest one to read here: 210 Nm, arriving at 2,000 rpm and holding to 4,500. In stop-start traffic that plus the CVT makes the JS4 relaxed to the point of being dull, which is the right character for a Dubai commute. There is no gearchange to wait for and no shunt at crawling speed, and the ride height means speed bumps and steep basement ramps pass underneath without ceremony.

Take it onto the E11 and the compromise shows up. Ask for a decisive overtake at 120 with the boot loaded and the revs climb ahead of the speed, which is simply what this kind of gearbox does. Top speed is 170 km/h and nothing in your week calls for it. If you drive quickly by instinct, that is the moment a rival with a conventional automatic starts to justify its higher rate. If you drive to get places, you will not think about it once.

One limit deserves stating plainly. The JS4 sends power to its front wheels only, and no all-wheel-drive version has ever been sold here. The raised body buys you kerbs and ramps, not sand. If your plan includes a desert camp, drive to the gate on tarmac and take a real 4x4 from there.

Running costs are straightforward. The tank holds 50 litres. JAC's UAE material publishes no official combined consumption figure, and the third-party numbers in circulation disagree with each other too widely for us to quote one as fact. What we can say from the fleet is that an ordinary city week with an airport run in it goes by on a single fill. Past the 300 km a day included, extra kilometres are AED 0.5 each. Salik deducts at every gate you pass and comes back to you, and any RTA fine raised while the car is yours does the same.

So which one do you book

Book the JS4 when the week involves luggage, passengers or both, and when a 360-degree camera and vents for the back seat matter more to you than a badge your neighbours already recognise. A family arriving for a fortnight, a couple moving between apartments, four friends who all packed properly: on those jobs it gives you more than anything else we run at the rate, and we hand keys to drivers from 18 with a year of licence behind them, which most Dubai desks will not do.

Book something else in two situations. If you spend most days at highway speed and want the car to answer the instant you ask, pay the step up to a rival with a torque-converter automatic and accept the smaller boot as the cost. And if there are two of you with a cabin bag each, none of the JS4's advantages apply to your week, so take a small automatic hatch and park it anywhere you like.
