Jac Js4 2023 - start from 159 AED / day

School run at seven, a supermarket shop at eleven, and a boot that has to take a week of groceries plus a folded pram without anyone rearranging anything. That is the week the JAC JS4 2023 gets booked for most often, and we rent it in Dubai to drivers from 18, where most desks here won't hand over keys before 21. One can be at your door in an hour or two. The case for it is simple. You get a 520-litre boot, a raised SUV driving position and a cabin with more kit in it than the rate suggests. What you give up is urgency once the road opens out.

How it drives, and where the CVT shows its hand

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbocharged four, 1,499 cc, making 147 hp and 210 Nm through a CVT to the front wheels. Read the torque figure properly and you learn most of what you need: it arrives at 2,000 rpm and holds all the way to 4,500, which is exactly the band you live in around town. Pulling away from lights, filtering through a packed car park, crawling along in the morning queue, the JS4 is easy and unbothered. The CVT deserves some credit here. There are no gearchanges to wait for and no low-speed shunt, just a smooth surge that suits the way Dubai actually drives.

The caveat arrives above 100. Ask for a decisive overtake on the E11 and the CVT sends the revs up before the car properly gathers itself, which is the familiar trade with this kind of gearbox. Top speed is 170 km/h and you have no reason to go looking for it. Cruise at 100 to 120 and the JS4 is settled, stable and quiet enough for a run out to Abu Dhabi. Drive it that way and it does the job well. Expect a quick car and you'll be let down.

Be clear about one thing: this is front-wheel drive only. It looks like an SUV and rides a little higher than a hatchback, but soft sand and dune tracks are not on the menu. If your week includes anything off tarmac, book a proper 4x4 instead.

Luggage, passengers and getting into a mall bay

The boot is the strongest single argument for this car. At 520 litres it takes two large hard cases and a couple of soft bags for a DXB pickup without anyone having to fold a seat, and for a family shop it's frankly more room than you'll use. Drop the 60:40 rear bench and you get close to 1,050 litres, which covers a flat-pack run or bulky sports gear. Compared with the small hatchbacks that rent for similar money, the JS4 is in a different conversation entirely on space.

Passengers do fine too. The 2,620 mm wheelbase gives rear legroom three adults can share on a cross-town trip, so four people plus their airport cases is comfortable rather than a squeeze. Up front, the 10.25-inch instrument display and matching centre screen with CarPlay and Android Auto feel a class above the daily rate.

Parking takes a little more thought. At 4,410 mm long and 1,800 mm wide it isn't big by SUV standards, but it's wider than the economy hatch you might have been considering, and older multi-storey bays in Marina towers are tight. The equipment saves you. A 360-degree camera and rear parking sensors let you place the car precisely instead of guessing at your mirrors. Ground clearance is quoted at a minimum of 150 mm at full load, so steep ramps and the aggressive speed bumps around residential clusters are a non-event. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are billed to you, and children under four need a child seat, which we'll fit before delivery.

What happens when it's 45 degrees

A tall cabin with a lot of glass gets brutally hot sitting in an uncovered bay in July, and the JS4 is no exception. What helps is what JAC actually fitted. This car has automatic air conditioning with rear air outlets, and rear vents are not a given at this end of the market. On a school run or a midday drive out to Hatta, the people in the back get cooled directly rather than waiting for cold air to drift back from the front. That single detail matters more in a Dubai summer than half the spec sheet.

The physics still apply. Give it two or three minutes of driving before the cabin is properly comfortable, drop the windows for the first twenty seconds to push the worst of the heat out, and park in shade where you can.

Fuel is harder to pin down honestly. JAC's UAE material doesn't publish a combined consumption figure and the third-party numbers disagree with each other, so we won't quote one. From the fleet, the 50-litre tank comfortably covers a week of school runs, errands and one airport trip on a single fill, with a second stop if you're commuting daily or heading out of the emirate. Your 300 km a day of included mileage is more than most renters go near, and anything beyond it runs at AED 0.5 per kilometre.

The badge question, and who should rent it

Plenty of people hesitate at a JAC, which is a fair reaction to a name you've never owned. It is sold properly in the UAE through Al Habtoor Motors rather than grey-imported, so these are cars specified for this climate with dealer support behind them. For a one-week rental the question is narrower anyway. You're not living with resale value or a service schedule, and if anything goes wrong with your car we swap it out.

Rent the JS4 if you want SUV space and seat height on an economy budget, if the boot matters, and if your week is mostly city driving with the odd highway run. For a family of four staying a month, or a couple arriving with real luggage, it's one of the smarter value picks we keep. Look elsewhere if you spend serious time at speed and want a car that responds when you ask, in which case a Geely Coolray gives you a lot more performance for a small step up, or if any part of your plan involves sand, where you need actual four-wheel drive and this car will only get you stuck.
