The smallest, cheapest crossover in Hyundai's range is the easiest one to live with in Dubai, and that's the case we'll make for the Hyundai Venue 2021. We rent it across the city and you settle however suits you on delivery: card, cash, bank transfer, Apple Pay, Google Pay, even crypto, with no insistence on one method. It's a five-seat SUV that drives like a tall hatchback, so you get the higher seat and the easy view without the bulk of a bigger car. For one or two people, or a couple with a child and a light load, it's the sensible pick. If you need real boot space and four adults in comfort, this is where we tell you to size up.
Think of the Venue as a small car with a crossover's posture. You sit higher than in a regular hatch, the cabin feels airy for its footprint, and parking is genuinely easy. The 1.6-litre engine gives 121 horsepower through the front wheels, which is fine for two people and city speeds and merely adequate when you load it up.
That's the honest line on power. Around town it never feels short. On Sheikh Zayed Road it'll cruise at the limit happily enough, but a full cabin and a sharp uphill overtake ask more than it has spare. If most of your week is errands, the school run and the odd airport collection, the Venue covers it. If you're four adults heading to Hatta with luggage, the Creta is the better tool and worth the step up.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Economy crossover SUV |
| Seats | 5 |
| Engine | 1.6-litre petrol, 121 hp |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Fuel tank | 45 litres |
| Boot (seats up) | About 355 litres |
| Length x width x height | 4040 x 1770 x 1565 mm |
| Ground clearance | 170 mm |
The figures that matter to a renter are the small ones. Compact dimensions and a 45-litre tank shape how the week actually goes, more than the headline horsepower does.
This is where the Venue asks you to be honest with yourself. The boot holds roughly 355 litres with the rear seats up, which in practice means one large suitcase and a soft bag, or two medium cases if you pack flat. It's a clean, square space and the load lip is low, so getting bags in and out is no fight.
For a solo traveller or a couple, that's plenty for a week. Add a third and fourth passenger with their own cases and you'll be folding part of the rear bench, which then costs you a seat. A typical DXB run with two people and their luggage is comfortable; the same run with four and full bags is where the small boot bites. That's the clearest reason some renters should look at a larger car.
Here the Venue earns its keep. At just over four metres long and 1.77 wide, it slots into the tight bays you find in Marina towers and older mall structures without the inching and re-shuffling a bigger SUV needs. U-turns are quick and the turning circle is tight.
Ground clearance is 170 mm, which is normal crossover territory. It clears Dubai's speed bumps without you slowing to a crawl, and steep mall ramps don't scrape. This isn't an off-roader, so keep it to tarmac and the occasional graded track, but for everyday city kerbs and ramps it sits at a reassuring height.
The cabin is small, and in Dubai's summer that works in your favour. When the car's been parked in the high 40s, there's simply less air to chill, so the AC pulls the temperature down fast once you're moving. Run the fan hard for the first minute or two and it's comfortable quickly. Front vents do the heavy lifting; there are no dedicated rear vents, so back-seat passengers rely on airflow from the front, which is fine in a cabin this size. Park in shade where you can and the first contact with the seat is a lot kinder.
The 45-litre tank is the Venue's quiet strength. With mostly city driving you'll see the kind of economy that means you're not at the pump often; a tank comfortably covers a normal week of errands and short hops before you think about refuelling. Petrol is cheap here, so a small, efficient crossover like this keeps the week's fuel bill low.
Two costs do land on you, and they're worth stating plainly. Salik tolls are billed to the renter each time you pass a gate, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you as well. Seat belts are required in every seat, and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours. None of that is Venue-specific, but it's the part of the bill people forget.
Rent the Venue if you're one or two people who want a higher seat, easy parking and low running costs for a week in the city. It's the most affordable crossover we hand over with a Hyundai badge, and for solo drivers, couples and light family use it does everything you'll ask without fuss. The delivery comes to you in one to two hours and you pay however you like at the door.
Skip it if you're regularly carrying four adults with luggage, or you want grunt for long highway stints and desert runs. For that, the Creta gives you the space and the muscle, and the extra is money well spent. The Venue's job is the city, and at this size and price it does that job better than anything bigger.
