We hand over the Hyundai Tucson 2020 across Dubai with doorstep delivery in one to two hours, so the car reaches your building or hotel before you've finished your coffee. This is the easy-driving compact SUV for a hot week here: a tall seat, a clear view over traffic, strong front-vent cooling, and a big boot, all at a value rate. It won't win a drag race on Sheikh Zayed Road, and the cabin is older and plainer than this year's crossovers. But for relaxed city driving and airport runs, with five seats and room to spare, it does the job without fuss.
Most people renting here aren't chasing a fast car. They want something that's calm in traffic, parks without drama, and keeps four passengers cool. The Tucson sits a little higher than a sedan, so you see further down the road and step in and out without ducking. The steering is light and the automatic is smooth in stop-and-go, which is most of what a week in the city actually is.
The 2.0-litre engine makes 150 hp through the front wheels. That's enough for the school run, the mall, and a relaxed cruise. Push it hard to overtake at 120 on the E11 and you'll notice it's working, especially with the car full and the AC on max. Plan your overtakes a beat earlier and it's a non-issue. If you want effortless highway pull, that's the honest reason to size up.
A parked Tucson in July is an oven, like any car here. The good news is the front vents push hard and the cabin isn't huge, so the air pulls down within a few minutes of pulling away. Crack the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the worst of the heat, then close up and let it run. Rear passengers get vents at the back of the centre console, which matters if you're carrying kids or adults in the back on a long airport trip. For a five-seat cabin this size, the cooling is one of the car's quieter strengths.
This is where the older Tucson earns its keep. The boot is genuinely useful: two large suitcases plus a couple of soft bags sit in with the rear seats up, which covers a family arriving at DXB or DWC with a week's worth of cases. Drop the rear seats and you've got a flat, long load space for bulky buys or sports kit. If you're four adults with four big cases, it's still fine, where a hatchback would have you stacking bags on laps.
At about 4.48 metres long it's compact enough for tight multi-storey bays and the curling ramps at Marina towers and the malls. U-turns are easy with the light steering. Ground clearance is 172 mm, so the steep speed bumps around residential blocks and the lips on mall ramps don't make you wince the way they do in a low sedan. It's a front-wheel-drive SUV, not a desert machine, so keep it on tarmac and graded tracks rather than soft dune runs.
The tank holds 62 litres. In real Dubai use, mostly city with the AC fighting the heat, expect somewhere around 10 to 11 litres per 100 km, easing off on open-highway stretches. That works out to a comfortable 550-odd km between fills in mixed driving, so a normal week of errands and a couple of longer runs means filling up maybe once. Fuel here is cheap, and topping a tank costs little. You'll spend more on Salik than petrol on a quiet week.

You pay the Salik tolls on the gates you cross, and any RTA fine from the rental period passes to you, so watch the cameras on Sheikh Zayed Road. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit on request. The 250 km daily distance covers normal city use comfortably; only a long day trip out of the city eats into it.
Rent the Tucson 2020 if you want a roomy, easy SUV for a Dubai week without paying SUV money: a small family, a couple with a lot of luggage, or anyone who just wants a higher seat and strong AC for city driving and airport runs. It's honest value and it asks nothing of you.
Look elsewhere in two cases. If you regularly carry six or seven people, this is a five-seater, so go for a proper seven-seat SUV. And if it's only ever you, light on luggage, hunting the cheapest possible rate and the easiest parking, a small hatch will cost less and slot into tighter spaces. For most people landing in between, the Tucson is the sensible middle.
