Few vans look like they wandered off a film set, but the Hyundai Staria 2023 does, and we hand the keys over across Dubai with 250 km a day already included in the rate. That mileage matters with a car this size, because nobody rents a nine-seater to sit still. The styling gets the attention, all glass and clean lines, but the reason to book one is simpler: it carries a big family and a week of luggage without anyone fighting for elbow room. This page is about whether that promise holds up, where the Staria shines, and the one or two places its sheer size asks something back from you.
Nine seats, and they are real seats, not jump-down afterthoughts squeezed into the back. Three rows, three across in the middle and back, and the second row is roomy enough that a tall adult behind a tall driver isn't trading knees. That's the headline for a big family or a group splitting one rental instead of two.
The trade you make with a full house is boot space. Load all nine bodies and the cargo area behind the third row shrinks to coats, daypacks, and a couple of soft bags, not a stack of hard suitcases. For a real airport run with everyone aboard, plan on cases riding on laps, or fold a section of the back row. Travelling six or seven? Then you keep a third row down and the Staria swallows luggage the way the styling promises. Decide before you book whether it's nine people light, or seven people with the holiday packed.
A van this tall and long is a lot of air to cool, and that's the honest concern when the cabin's been baking at 45 degrees in a mall car park. The Staria's saving grace is rear vents that actually reach the second and third rows, so cold air gets to the kids in the back rather than dying at the front seats. Expect the first couple of minutes to clear the worst of the heat and a good five to settle a fully sun-soaked cabin, which is normal for a vehicle this volume. Crack the windows for ten seconds before you blast the AC and the cooldown is a non-issue. People-carriers without rear vents are the ones you regret in July, and this isn't one of them.

The 3.5-litre V6 is the right engine for the job. With 249 hp it has no trouble moving a loaded van up to highway pace, and the automatic keeps things smooth, so a full Staria merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road feels relaxed rather than strained. It isn't quick, 13.5 seconds to 100 and a 210 top speed it'll never need, but you don't buy a nine-seater for the sprint. You buy it for unbothered cruising with a cabin full of people, and that it does well.
Petrol economy is where you stay realistic. Count on around 10.5 litres per 100 km in mixed driving, more in heavy traffic with the AC working hard. The 75-litre tank still gives roughly 700 km between fills, so on a normal week of school runs and the odd airport trip you're looking at one fill-up, maybe two if you're covering ground. The mileage included means you can use the range without watching the odometer.
This is the part to be straight about. At over 5.2 metres long and nearly 2 metres wide, the Staria is a big vehicle to thread through tight multi-storey car parks and Marina side streets. Bays feel snug, U-turns need a beat more room, and the 1990 mm height is the one to remember: plenty of older parking structures have height barriers around 2 metres, so check the clearance sign before you nose in. The rear camera and sensors take most of the stress out of reversing. The 186 mm of ground clearance clears speed bumps and mall ramps without a scrape, which a low MPV can't always say, and the DXB or DWC drop-off lanes are built for vehicles this size.
A few Dubai rules ride with the keys. Salik tolls are charged to you as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental are yours to settle. Seatbelts are required in every one of those nine seats, and children under four need a proper child seat, worth sorting before a full-family trip.
Rent the Staria 2023 when the passenger count is the whole point: a large family under one roof, a group sharing one vehicle, multi-generation visits where everyone travels together. It's comfortable, it cruises, and the looks are a bonus nobody complains about. Just go in clear-eyed on two things. Pack light or leave a seat folded if you're near full, because nine people and nine suitcases don't both fit. And respect the size in tight parking, especially those height barriers. If your real need is four or five people with a mountain of luggage and easy city parking, a large SUV suits you better. For moving the most people in the most comfort, this is the one we'd point you to.
