We rent the Hyundai Creta 2020 in Dubai on a no-deposit plan, which is the whole point of this car: it's the cheapest honest way to put a family up at SUV height for a week without tying up a few thousand dirhams on a card hold. This is the older-generation Creta, a five-seat compact crossover with a 1.6 petrol and an automatic. It won't win you any looks at the valet, but it does the boring jobs well, and that's what most weeks here actually need.

Think of it as the value pick in the Creta line. The 2023, 2024 and 2025 cars have newer screens, sharper styling and a more polished cabin, and they cost more to rent. This 2020 car gives you the same things that matter on a rental, a higher seating position, five real seats and a boot that swallows a week's shopping, at the softest rate in the family.

If you're two adults running mall trips, a couple of kids in the back, the odd run out to the desert edge, it's plenty of car. You sit up, you see over the traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, and you park it anywhere a sedan fits. The trade is honesty about age: the plastics are plainer, the infotainment is older, and the 121 HP engine is relaxed rather than quick. None of that stops it doing the job.

For a compact SUV the Creta's boot is genuinely useful. Two large cases stand upright with room for a couple of soft bags on top, which covers a family flying into DXB or DWC for a week. Fold the rear seats and it opens up enough for a stroller, a cooler and a full grocery run from the warehouse stores out on the edge of town.

Where it gets tight is the airport run with the boot full and four adults aboard. The back seat is fine for two grown-ups and a child, but a fifth passenger plus everyone's cases is asking a lot. That's the line where I'd point you at a bigger SUV.

Heat, AC and the school-run reality

The cooling is the part that decides a summer rental, and the Creta handles it. Park it under the sun at 45 and the cabin bakes like every car here, but the front vents pull it back to comfortable within a few minutes of driving, and there are rear vents so kids in the back aren't left to suffer. It's a smaller cabin than a Tucson, which actually helps, less air to cool means it gets there faster. Crack the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the worst of the heat and you'll be cold by the first set of lights.

Running it through a Dubai week

The 50-litre tank and real-world economy around 14 to 15 km/L give you a usable 575 to 625 km between fills. For mostly city driving that's a tank a week for a lot of people, maybe a top-up if you're doing daily airport runs or a trip out to Hatta. Cheap to feed, which fits the brief.

At 190 mm of ground clearance it clears the speed bumps in residential blocks and the steep mall ramps in the Marina without scraping, something low sedans can't always claim. It's an easy car to place in tight multi-storey bays and U-turns too, since it's no wider than a normal hatch.

On the open road the 1.6 is the honest weak spot. It cruises at 120 on the E11 happily enough, but overtaking a truck uphill needs planning, not a stab of the throttle. If your week is mostly long highway hauls between emirates, a stronger engine earns its money. For city and suburb driving, which is what most rentals are, it's fine.

A note on the rules, since they're yours to manage: Salik tolls and any RTA fines run to the renter, seatbelts are required in every seat, and children under four need a child seat. Quick to sort, worth knowing before you set off.

The verdict

Rent the 2020 Creta if you want SUV practicality at the lowest sensible rate and you don't care that the cabin is a generation behind. For a family doing city errands, mall runs and the occasional airport trip on a budget, with no deposit locked up, it's hard to beat on value.

Pay up for a newer Creta if the older screen and plainer interior will bother you, or if you want the extra polish for a longer stay. And if you're regularly five adults with full luggage, or you spend most of the week cruising and overtaking on the highway, size up to a Tucson and give yourself the room and the engine to match.
