If your Dubai week is errands, the school run, and finding a bay in a packed mall garage, the Hyundai Creta 2020 handles all of it from a higher, easier seat than a hatch. We rent it in Dubai from age 18, where most desks hold out for 21, and deliver it to your door with 250 km a day included. This is the older-generation Creta, a five-seat compact SUV with a 1.6 petrol and an automatic, and it's the affordable way to put yourself at SUV height for a week. What this page sorts out is whether its age is a problem for you, or simply the reason it's the cheapest sensible SUV in the line.
This is where the older Creta quietly wins. At 1790 mm wide and 4.3 metres long it's no harder to park than a normal hatch, so tight multi-storey bays, the steep Marina ramps, and busy mall garages don't turn into a wrestle. The 190 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and the lips on mall entrances without scraping, something low sedans can't always claim. You sit up high with big glass all round, which makes U-turns and reversing simple and gives you a clear view over the traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road.

The 2020 car is a generation behind the 2024 and 2025 Cretas, and you can tell. The plastics are plainer, the infotainment screen is older and slower, and the styling won't turn heads at the valet. None of that changes what the car actually does on a rental. It still has five real seats, the same useful boot, the higher seating, and an automatic that's easy in traffic. If a dated cabin will nag at you all week, pay up for a newer Creta. If you just want a working SUV at the softest rate, this is it.
The 433-litre boot is genuinely practical. Two large suitcases stand upright with room for a couple of soft bags, which covers a family flying into DXB or DWC for a week, and folding the rear seats opens it up for a stroller and a grocery run. The back seat is fine for two adults and a child. Where it runs out is the airport pickup with five aboard and everyone's cases at once, and that's the line where I'd point you at a bigger SUV.
Cooling decides a summer rental, and the Creta copes. Park it in the open at 45 degrees and the cabin bakes like every car here, but the front vents pull it back to comfortable within a few minutes of driving, and there are rear vents so kids in the back aren't left to suffer. The smaller cabin actually helps, since there's less air to chill. Drop the windows for the first thirty seconds to clear the worst of the heat, and you'll be cold by the first set of lights.
The 50-litre tank and combined economy near 7 L/100 km give a working range close to 700 km, though real city traffic with the AC running pushes consumption nearer 8 to 9. For mostly town driving that's still around a tank a week for a lot of people, and petrol here is cheap, so it costs little to feed. The 1.6 is the honest weak spot on the highway. It cruises at 120 happily, but a hard overtake uphill needs planning rather than a stab of throttle. For long inter-emirate hauls a stronger engine earns its money. For city and suburb running, which is what most rentals are, it's fine. A note on the rules, since they fall to you: Salik tolls and any RTA fines run to the renter, and a child seat is required for under-fours.
Rent the 2020 Creta if you want SUV height and practicality at the lowest sensible rate, you're parking in tight city garages all week, and an older cabin doesn't bother you. For errands, school runs, and the occasional airport trip, it does everything most weeks here need, and renting from 18 makes it reachable for younger drivers.
Pay up for a newer Creta if the dated screen and plainer interior will grate, or if you want more polish for a longer stay. And if you're regularly five adults with full luggage, or you spend most of the week overtaking on the highway, size up to a Tucson for the room and the engine to match.
