Step inside a Haval Jolion 2024 and the first thing you notice is a cabin that reads pricier than the daily rate suggests, which is the whole reason this compact SUV rents so well in Dubai. We hand it over with a no-deposit option, so you can book without a chunk of your card tied up for the week. The 2024 facelift sharpened the engine and tidied the interior, and the result is a small SUV that punches above its class on kit while staying cheap to run. Our argument is straightforward. For a couple or a small family who want a modern cabin and SUV height without mid-size money, the Jolion is the value pick. For four adults with airport luggage or real off-road plans, it's the wrong call, and we'll explain where.
This is where the Jolion earns its keep. The 2024 car runs a large central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, a reversing camera, and soft-touch materials where your arms actually rest. After a week in a basic economy hatch, the step up is obvious the moment you sit in. It feels modern rather than budget, which matters when you're living in the car for seven days of errands and airport runs.
It's a proper five-seater. Two up front have room to spare, and three across the back works for kids or shorter trips. The raised seating position gives you a clear view of Dubai's wide multi-lane roads without the bulk that makes a tall SUV a chore in a mall car park.
The facelift brought a 1.5-litre turbo making 143 hp and 210 Nm, driving the front wheels through an automatic. The 9.8-second run to 100 km/h tells you what to expect: brisk enough to merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road with confidence, relaxed rather than quick. It has the mid-range to overtake on the E11 without dropping its nerve, and it settles into a quiet, planted cruise at legal speeds.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Compact SUV, 5-door |
| Seats | 5 |
| Engine | 1.5-litre turbo petrol |
| Power | 143 hp (105 kW) |
| Torque | 210 Nm |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Fuel tank | 55 litres |
| Fuel economy | around 7.5 L/100km combined |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4472 x 1874 x 1626 mm |
| Ground clearance | 168 mm |
| Boot | 337 L, up to 1133 L seats folded |
| 0 to 100 km/h | 9.8 seconds |
| Colour | White |
The boot holds 337 litres with all five seats up, which in real terms is two large cases plus a couple of soft bags, or a big weekly shop with room to spare. Two people flying in with a check-in case each will shut the tailgate without a fight. Add a third and fourth passenger with their own luggage and it gets tight, so a family of four heading to DXB or DWC for a week should drop part of the 60:40 rear seat or accept one bag on a lap. Fold the seats flat and you free up 1133 litres, enough for flat-pack furniture or a couple of bikes if the week takes that turn.
At roughly 7.5 litres per 100 km combined, the 55-litre tank gives you a genuine 600-plus kilometres of mixed driving. Real Dubai use runs a touch thirstier once you factor in stop-start Marina traffic and the AC working flat out, so call it one fill for a normal week of school runs, errands and a beach trip or two. The turbo likes 95-octane, which keeps the per-fill cost sensible.
This decides more Dubai rentals than anything on the spec sheet. Park a Jolion in open sun in July and the cabin hits oven temperatures within minutes, the same as any car here. The compact cabin volume works in your favour, though: there's less air to chill, and on full blast the front vents pull a parked cabin down to comfortable in roughly five to seven minutes. There are rear vents too, so back-seat passengers and kids in child seats aren't left baking while the front cools first. Crack the windows for the first half-minute and it gets there faster.
At 4.47 metres the Jolion is easy to place. Tight multi-storey bays, the steep Marina ramp, and mall entrances are all straightforward, and the high seat helps you judge the corners. The 168 mm of clearance handles Dubai speed bumps and raised mall lips without the scrape a low hatch gives you. It's front-wheel drive, though, so it's a road car. For soft sand and dune tracks you'd want a proper 4x4. A quick note on the running costs that fall to you: Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the hire pass to the renter, and a child seat is required by law for under-fours.
Rent the Jolion 2024 if you want a modern cabin and SUV height for a week in Dubai without paying mid-size SUV rates. It's the sweet spot for a couple or a small family who value the screen-and-camera kit and the comfortable seating over outright space, and the running costs stay low.
Skip it if your week is four adults plus a full set of airport cases, where a sedan or a larger SUV gives you a deeper boot, or if you're set on real desert driving, which needs the all-wheel drive this front-driver doesn't have. For straightforward Dubai life, though, the Jolion gives you more car than the rate suggests.
