A large central touchscreen runs the show, the digital driver's display looks sharp, and the surfaces your arms actually touch are soft rather than scratchy plastic. After a week in a basic economy hatch, stepping into this feels like an upgrade you didn't pay full price for. The reversing camera and parking sensors come standard on the trims we run, which earn their keep the first time you reverse into a packed mall basement.

It's a genuine five-seater. Two up front have room to spare, and three across the back works for kids or for shorter adult trips. The raised seating gives you the clear view over traffic that makes Dubai's wide multi-lane roads easy to read.

The gearbox, and how it drives

The 1.5-litre turbo makes 148 hp through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. On the open road that's plenty. It merges onto Sheikh Zayed Road without drama and has the mid-range to overtake on the E11 without a long run-up. The dual-clutch is the honest caveat. These gearboxes are smooth and quick once you're moving, but they can hesitate for a beat in slow stop-and-go traffic, the low-speed crawl you get approaching a busy Marina junction. It's a characteristic, not a fault, and most renters stop noticing it after a day. If a perfectly smooth creep in heavy traffic is your priority, a car with a conventional torque-converter automatic will feel better at walking pace.

Heat and the AC

This decides more Dubai rentals than anything on the spec sheet. Leave any car parked in July sun and the cabin turns into an oven within minutes, and the Jolion is no exception. What works in its favour is the compact cabin volume, which gives the AC less air to chill. On full blast the front vents pull a parked cabin down to comfortable in roughly five to seven minutes, and there are rear vents so back-seat passengers and kids in child seats aren't left waiting for the cool air to reach them. Crack the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the trapped heat and it gets there faster.

Fuel, luggage and the Dubai bits

At 13.9 km/l combined, the 55-litre tank stretches a long way. Real city use with the AC working hard and stop-start traffic runs thirstier than that lab number, so call it one comfortable fill for a normal week of errands, school runs and a beach trip or two. There's also a hybrid version of this Jolion in the market that goes further between stops, but the car we hand over here is the turbo petrol, and on Dubai's cheap fuel it stays inexpensive to run.

Boot space is honest mid-class. You'll fit two large suitcases plus a couple of soft bags with all five seats up, which suits two people flying in with check-in cases. Add a third and fourth passenger with their own luggage and it gets tight, so fold part of the 60:40 rear seats or accept one bag on a lap. The 168 mm of clearance clears Dubai speed bumps and mall ramps without the scrape of a low hatch, though it's a road car, so leave soft sand to a proper 4x4.

A couple of rental rules sit with you. Salik tolls charge to the account as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you. Seat belts are required in every seat, and children under four need a child seat, which we can fit.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't
