A common booking for the Haval Jolion 2024 goes like this. A family lands in Dubai on a new residence visa, their own car is still weeks away, and they need five seats and a boot for the nursery run, the weekly shop and the occasional airport collection. We deliver to the door in one to two hours, so the car is usually working by the same afternoon. What people ask next is what a month of that actually costs to keep moving. On fuel and included mileage, the Jolion answers well. Where it starts to struggle is the day you put four adults and their luggage in it at once.
Haval claims 7.3 L/100 km combined. That is a laboratory figure and nobody in Dubai gets it, because the air conditioning runs from March to November and the small turbo works harder here than it does on a test cycle. Real mixed driving lands closer to 9 L/100 km. Against a 55-litre tank that gives roughly 600 km between fills, and an ordinary city week of school runs, work and errands does not come close to 600 km. Most renters fill once and hand the car back on the same tank.
Included mileage rarely bites either. Every rental runs on 300 km a day with extra kilometres at AED 0.5 each, and Dubai city driving is a fraction of that. Even an Abu Dhabi round trip sits inside the daily allowance with room left over. The people who need to watch the odometer are the ones making that drive several days running, or adding a Fujairah weekend on top of an already busy week.
Two costs sit on your side of the paperwork. Salik charges at every gate go to the renter, and any RTA fine issued during the hire passes to you as well. Neither is heavy if you plan routes with a bit of sense, though the Sheikh Zayed Road gates add up over a month when you cross them twice a day.
The boot holds 337 litres with the rear seats up. For the errand week described above that is plenty, and a full trolley of shopping, a pushchair and a bag of sports kit all go in without folding anything down. Measured as airport luggage it is two large cases plus a couple of soft bags, which covers a couple or a family with small children. Four adults landing at DXB with a case each will end up putting one on the back seat, and if that is your trip, size up rather than hope.
The car is also bigger than it looks on a listing page. At 4472 mm long on a 2700 mm wheelbase, the Jolion gives rear passengers proper legroom, which is the difference between a teenager tolerating the drive to Abu Dhabi and complaining about it the whole way. Width stays a modest 1841 mm, so multi-storey bays and older Marina towers are manageable, but this is not the car you thread into the last awkward corner space in a mall basement. The 168 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's residential speed bumps and the steeper mall ramps without any scraping.
None of that makes it a desert car. The Jolion drives its front wheels only and there is no all-wheel-drive version sold here, so keep it on tarmac. Soft sand will strand it. If anyone in the party is under four, the law requires a proper child seat, and we fit one before delivery.

Anything left outdoors in a Dubai summer turns into an oven, and the Jolion is no exception. The useful question is how fast it recovers once you are moving.
It is a fair performer here rather than a remarkable one. The cabin is a reasonable size and there is a lot of glass, so a car sitting in the open for a few hours comes back genuinely hot. Drop both front windows for the first thirty seconds of driving to push the trapped air out, then run the fan hard. The front vents blow cold quickly and the cabin is comfortable within about five minutes of rolling. There are rear vents too, which matters more than people expect once there is a child seat behind the driver in August.
Underground parking changes the arithmetic completely, and most Dubai buildings and malls give you the option. Use it. A car that starts at 30 degrees rather than 60 is cool before you reach the exit ramp.
Take the Haval Jolion 2024 if your weeks look like that family's: city distances, five seats needed some of the time, and a boot that has to swallow a shop rather than a holiday. On running cost per seat it is one of the better things we rent, and we hand the keys over from age 18, where most Dubai desks will not deal with anyone under 21.
Book something else in three situations. Four adults with full airport luggage want a mid-size SUV, not this one. A weekend involving sand wants a real four-wheel drive, and no amount of ground clearance changes that. And if you are the sort of driver who notices a dual-clutch gearbox pausing at crawling pace, heavy Downtown traffic will wear on you, so ask for a car with a conventional automatic when you book. Outside those three, the Jolion does the ordinary Dubai week cheaply and without drama, which is most of what anyone asks a rental car to do.
