The decision on a Haval Jolion 2024 comes down to one trade: you are renting equipment and cabin space rather than driving polish. In Dubai that gets you a compact SUV with a large touchscreen, a high seat and five usable places, at a daily rate that elsewhere buys a plain hatchback. What you give up is refinement, most of it in how the gearbox behaves at crawling speed. Where the money went

Haval spent its budget on the parts you touch. The screen is large, the instruments are digital, the plastics look better than the badge suggests, and there is driver assistance kit here that other makers reserve for cars costing a good deal more. That is the whole reason the Jolion books out. People walk up expecting a budget crossover and find a cabin that feels a segment above the rate they are paying.

Size is the other quiet advantage. At 4472 mm long on a 2700 mm wheelbase, the Jolion is meaningfully bigger than most of the small crossovers it gets shopped against, and you feel it in the back seat, where an adult can sit behind an adult without a negotiation. Where the money did not go is the drivetrain and the steering, and both of those come up later.

Luggage, passengers and the summer test

The boot holds 337 litres. In practice that is two large cases plus a couple of soft bags, which suits a couple or a family of four for a week. Load four adults with full airport luggage and you will be stacking things on laps, so for that job take a mid-size SUV instead. The rear seats split and fold when you need to move something awkward.

Then there is the part of the car that matters most between June and September. Leave the Jolion parked in the open at 45 degrees and it bakes like everything else in the car park. The air conditioning brings the cabin back to comfortable within a few minutes once you are rolling with the fans up, and there are rear vents, so back-seat passengers and child seats are not left to suffer. That is competent cooling for the money rather than a luxury climate system. The usual advice still helps: park in shade where you can, drop the windows for the first half minute, and let the fans clear the worst of it while you drive.

On Sheikh Zayed Road and everywhere else

147 hp through a seven-speed wet dual-clutch to the front wheels is enough for Dubai traffic and not a great deal more. Merging onto the E11 is fine. Overtaking a slow lorry with four people aboard takes planning, because the mid-range thins out and the engine gets loud before it gets quick. Sitting at 100 to 120 the Jolion is relaxed, the ride is on the soft side, and long airport runs to DXB or DWC pass comfortably.

The gearbox is where you make your decision. Dual-clutch transmissions are efficient and quick once they are moving, but at crawling pace, the kind you get on a packed mall ramp or in Downtown traffic at six in the evening, this one pauses before it commits and then catches with a small nudge. That is normal behaviour for the type rather than a fault, and most renters stop noticing after a day. The 168 mm of ground clearance handles Dubai speed bumps and steep mall entries without the scraping noise a low sedan makes. It is not off-road ability. The Jolion drives its front wheels only, so keep it on tarmac and well away from soft sand. Two things sit on your side of the paperwork: Salik charges run to the renter at every gate, and any RTA fine during the hire passes to you as well.

Who should take it, and who should not

Take the Haval Jolion 2024 if you want the most cabin, screen and equipment your daily rate will buy, your week is city errands, school runs and the occasional highway trip, and you can live with a gearbox that thinks before it moves. Look elsewhere if refinement is the thing you are actually paying for. Anyone spending the week on long highway stints with a full car, or who simply wants the quiet competence of a Corolla Cross or a Creta, will be happier in one of those and should ask for it by name. And if the weekend plan involves sand, this is the wrong car entirely. Book a proper four-wheel-drive for that and leave the Jolion to the tarmac it was built for.
