Need a small crossover that handles a couple's weekend bags and a child seat without the bulk of a full SUV? We hand over the Haval Jolion 2023 across Dubai, and we rent it to drivers from 18, where most of the market makes you wait until 21. The Jolion sits in that practical middle ground: tall enough to see over traffic, short enough to park, with a boot that takes a real shop. This page is about whether it suits everyday Dubai life for couples and small families, where it's genuinely comfortable, and where its modest engine and low-speed gearbox manners mean you should think twice.
It's a compact crossover on a budget, not a fast or sporty one. At 4,472 mm long it's easy to thread through a multi-storey and forgiving on a U-turn, yet the raised seating and 168 mm of clearance give you a clear view of the road and an easy step in and out. For two adults plus a child seat, or four adults on shorter runs, the cabin is roomy and the materials feel a class above the price. The driving position is the selling point most rental listings skip: you sit up, you see well, and after a week it stays comfortable.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol |
| Power | 150 HP |
| Transmission | 7-speed wet dual-clutch (DCT) |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | 337 L (seats up), 1,133 L (folded) |
| Fuel economy | 12 km/L city, 16 km/L highway |
| Fuel tank | 55 L |
| Range | around 680 km |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,472 x 1,841 x 1,574 mm |
| Ground clearance | 168 mm |
| Colours | Hamilton White, Golden Black, Mars Red, Azure Blue, Smoke Grey, Vivid Green, Glacier Blue |
For this class, the boot is one of the Jolion's real strengths. The 337-litre space takes two medium cases plus a couple of soft bags, which covers an airport pickup for two with room over. A family doing the weekly grocery run will load it without playing luggage Tetris. Fold the rear seats and you get 1,133 litres, enough for a flat-pack run or a stroller plus a week of bags. If you regularly carry three large hard cases and four adults at once, you're at the edge of what it does well, and a mid-size SUV makes more sense.
This is where the honesty matters. The 1.5 turbo makes 150 HP and gets to 100 in around ten seconds, which is fine for keeping pace on Sheikh Zayed Road and merging onto the E11 with a bit of planning. It cruises calmly at highway speed. What it isn't is quick, and a fully loaded car on an uphill on-ramp asks you to be patient.
The bigger thing to know is the gearbox. The 7-speed wet dual-clutch is smooth and economical once you're moving, but like most dual-clutch units it can hesitate from a standstill, in stop-and-go traffic, and on tight parking crawls. You learn its rhythm in a day, and then it's a non-issue, but if you've never driven a DCT and you spend your week in Marina gridlock, that low-speed pause will annoy you at first. Drivers who want the totally smooth pull-away of a conventional automatic should know that going in.
On running cost, the figures are realistic for Dubai. Expect roughly 12 km/L around town and up to 16 km/L on the highway. With the 55-litre tank that's around 680 km of mixed driving, so a normal week of commuting and errands is one fill, maybe two if you're doing daily airport runs. That's competitive for a turbocharged crossover and easy on the rental budget.
In a Dubai summer the AC is the test, and the Jolion passes for its class. Park it in the sun at 45 and the front vents pull the cabin down to comfortable within a few minutes, and there are rear vents, so passengers in the back aren't left to suffer on a school run or an airport transfer. It's not luxury-grade climate control, but it's genuinely effective.
Size works in your favour here. At under 1.85 m wide it slips into tight mall and Marina bays that a bigger SUV fights with, and the 168 mm clearance clears speed bumps and standard ramps without scraping, though you'll still slow for the steeper community humps. A reversing camera takes the guesswork out of parallel spots.
A few operational facts worth stating plainly. Salik tolls are billed to you, the renter, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you as well. Seat belts are required in every seat, and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours, which we can fit on request. None of this is unique to the Jolion, but it's the part renters forget until the toll gate beeps.
We deliver to your door across Dubai, usually within one to two hours, and the booking takes debit and credit cards, cash, bank transfer, Apple Pay and Google Pay, with a no-deposit option if you'd rather not lock up a hold.
Rent the Jolion if you're a couple or a small family on a budget who want a comfortable, easy-to-park crossover with a usable boot and a high seating position for a week of city driving, mall runs and the odd highway stretch. It's especially sensible for younger drivers, since we rent it from 18. Look elsewhere if you need genuine pace, carry four adults and full luggage regularly, or you simply won't get on with a dual-clutch crawl in heavy traffic, in which case a Toyota Corolla Cross or a comparable established crossover with a conventional automatic is the safer pick.
