The Haval H6 2024 is the size-up move from GWM's own Jolion, and it only earns that step in specific ways. Both rent in Dubai as automatics from the same brand, but the H6 brings a bigger cabin, a proper 2.0-litre turbo engine and real space for four adults with luggage, at a price that sits closer to a mainstream mid-size SUV than a compact crossover. We get it to your door in one to two hours, no counter queue involved. This page is about when that extra size and power actually earn their keep over the smaller Jolion, and when you'd be paying more for room you won't use.

The engine, and how it drives

The H6 carries a 2.0-litre turbo four making 201 hp and 320 Nm, well up on the Jolion's 1.5-litre turbo, and it's paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic rather than the CVT that a lot of mid-size SUVs at this price still use. The extra displacement shows up where it matters most in Dubai driving: merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road with a full cabin, or pulling out to overtake at 120 without the engine hunting for a lower gear first. The Jolion has to work harder to do the same job.

This is a front-wheel-drive car, and there's no all-wheel-drive H6 in this listing to fall back on. That's fine for the roads it's built for. Treat the turbo punch as a highway and city asset, not an invitation to head for Hatta's rougher tracks, because the drivetrain simply isn't built for that. A dual-clutch box can hesitate for half a beat pulling away from a dead stop in heavy traffic, a habit of the gearbox type rather than a fault with this car specifically, and it settles down the moment you're rolling.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

Boot space is 560 litres with the rear seats up, which is where the H6 actually separates itself from its smaller sibling. The Jolion's 337-litre boot takes one large case and a couple of soft bags; the H6 comfortably swallows two full-size suitcases plus carry-ons, the kind of load a family of four brings back from a week away rather than a couple's overnight bag. Fold the 60:40 rear bench and there's considerably more room again for anything bulkier, a stroller and a week of grocery runs, say.

The back seat matches the boot. At 4,653 mm long and 1,886 mm wide, the H6 is a genuinely bigger footprint than the Jolion's 4,468 x 1,841 mm, and most of that extra length and width goes into rear legroom. Four adults sit properly here, not the "fine for two, tight for four" compromise that defines the compact class below it. That width does cost you a little in a tight multi-storey bay in Marina or JLT, where an older ramp built for smaller cars asks for a slightly more careful line than a Jolion needs, but nothing a normal reverse-in can't manage.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

GWM quotes 7.7 L/100km combined for the 2.0T. That's a lab figure, and a bigger, heavier car running the AC hard through a Dubai summer won't match it. Expect closer to 10 L/100km across a normal week of city driving and highway runs, which still gives the 60-litre tank a real-world range around 600 km, enough that most renters fill up once or twice over a week rather than daily.

Your allowance on this car is 250 km a day, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, worth watching if a Hatta day trip or an Abu Dhabi run is on the itinerary. Salik tolls and any RTA fines land on the renter, same as every car in this fleet, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys on the H6, a higher bar than some of the smaller cars we rent.

A cabin this size takes a little longer to pull down from a parked afternoon at 45 degrees Celsius than the Jolion's smaller footprint does, simply because there's more air to move. Once you're driving, the front vents get there within a few minutes and hold a comfortable temperature for four people, not just the front two. Crack the windows for the first thirty seconds after you climb back in and it cools faster than sealing the doors immediately.

Who should rent it, and who should size down

Rent the H6 if your week genuinely needs the space: four adults, real luggage, a mix of city driving and longer highway runs where the extra torque is worth feeling. It's the Haval to book when the Jolion's boot and back seat would leave you compromising on every trip out.

Size down to the Jolion if it's one or two people doing mall runs, errands and the odd airport pickup, since you'll be paying for a bigger engine and a bigger cabin you won't use, and the smaller car is easier to place in a tight parking bay. If your plans include actual off-road driving, look elsewhere entirely. The H6 is front-wheel drive only, built for tarmac, and no amount of ride height on paper changes that. For a family or a group of four covering real distance around the city and beyond, the H6 is the more sensible booking of the two.
