Most small SUVs at this money are built to be transport and nothing more. The Geely Coolray 2025 has an engine that says otherwise, and that one fact decides who should rent one in Dubai. It makes most sense to someone whose week has real road in it: a daily run up Sheikh Zayed Road, a trip out to Abu Dhabi, a late pickup from the airport. If your driving is five kilometres of errands at a time, you are carrying a small boot around for an engine you will never stretch. What 174 hp does in a car this small

The 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol makes 174 hp and 290 Nm through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, driving the front wheels. In a car this size that is a lot of engine, and 100 km/h arrives in about 7.6 seconds.

What that buys you on a Dubai road is margin. Slip roads onto the E11 stop being a calculation. You see a gap, you take it, and you are at the speed of the traffic before the lane runs out. Passing a slow lorry on a single-carriageway stretch out toward Hatta takes one clean move instead of a long committed run. Most cars renting at this rate are working hard by 120 km/h, while this one sits there quietly with something still in hand.

The gearbox needs one caveat

The boot is the number that decides bookings, and 330 litres is small for a car of this shape. A week's shopping for two, a pushchair with the bits that go with it, or a set of golf clubs and a soft bag will go in. Four people arriving with four check-in cases will not, and no clever loading changes that. The rear bench splits and folds into a genuinely useful flat space for bulky gear, once you accept you have given up the seats to get it.

On fuel, 6.5 L/100km is the official combined figure. Driven properly in Dubai, with the air conditioning working and a turbo that answers a heavy foot, expect nearer 8, which puts real range from the 45-litre tank at roughly 550 km. A normal city week is one fuel stop. The kind of week this car suits is two, and the number to watch is mileage rather than petrol: every rental includes 300 km a day, with extra kilometres at AED 0.5 each. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the hire are billed to you, so it pays to know which gates your commute crosses.

Cooling a small cabin in August

Any car left in an open bay through a Dubai afternoon is a bad place to be for the first minute, and this one is no exception. What works in its favour is volume. There is not much air in here to shift, so the front vents get on top of it quickly once you are moving, and rear vents are fitted, which is the detail that counts if a child seat is going in the back in July. Children under four need one by law and we can fit it before delivery.

The honest caveat is load. Sitting still in traffic at 45 degrees with the air conditioning at full effort, a small turbocharged engine has less in reserve than it does at speed, and you feel a little of that in how the car pulls away from a standstill. You notice it in August and never in February.

Who should book it, and who's wasting the engine

Rent the Coolray if your Dubai week involves distance. Commuters running the length of Sheikh Zayed Road twice a day, anyone doing Abu Dhabi and back, and drivers who just want the quickest thing available at this rate will understand the car by the end of the first trip. Two people and their luggage fit it comfortably. We hand it over from age 18, which most desks in this city will not do.

Book something else in three cases. If you are collecting four adults and their luggage from the airport, the boot settles it and you want a sedan or a larger crossover such as the Jolion. If a dual-clutch's low-speed manners are the sort of thing that irritates you, take a car with a conventional automatic instead. And if your whole week is short errands within a few kilometres of home, a plain economy hatchback does that job for less money, and you will never once call on what this engine offers.

The Coolray is worth its rate to the person who actually drives it.
