Rent Geely Coolray 2024 in Dubai

A fair number of our Geely Coolray 2024 bookings in Dubai start life as swap requests. Someone takes a mid-size SUV for the week, spends two evenings trying to reverse it into a residential bay that was painted when cars were narrower, and rings us on day three asking for something smaller that still sits high. The Coolray is what we bring, usually inside a couple of hours. It is the honest answer to that problem: crossover height and a turbocharged engine that is genuinely quick, wrapped in a body short enough to park without a second thought. What it asks back is boot space, and that is what decides who should book it.

The bay you actually have

At 4380 mm long and 1810 mm wide, the Coolray is about the size of a family hatchback that has been raised. That sounds unremarkable until you are threading down the ramp of an older tower with concrete pillars on both sides and a mirror-to-mirror gap that leaves you very little to play with. This car takes those bays in one movement. A mid-size crossover takes three, and takes them badly if there is a car waiting behind you.

The other half of the size story is height, and specifically the 180 mm of ground clearance. Dubai builds its residential speed bumps to be taken seriously, and a few mall ramps break over more sharply than they look from the road. The Coolray clears both without any scraping and without the flinch you get in a low sedan. You still slow down for the worst of them. You are just not bracing for a noise.

You also sit high enough to see over the car ahead in traffic, and the bonnet is short enough that you know where the front corners are on a tight U-turn.

The boot is the number to look at before you book. 330 litres is small for a car this shape, and it is the reason a share of our Coolray renters end up in something bigger later in the month. One large hard case and a soft bag is a realistic load. Four adults with four check-in cases is not, and nothing clever with the loading changes it. Drop the 60:40 bench and you have a genuinely useful flat space for bulky gear, at the cost of the rear seats.

What it does once you leave the car park

Small does not mean slow here. The 1.5-litre turbo makes 174 hp and 290 Nm, which is a serious amount of engine for a car of this weight, and 100 km/h arrives in around 7.6 seconds. In practice that means joining a fast-moving highway is a decision rather than a plan. You look, you go, and the gap you picked is still there when you arrive in it.

Cruising is the part that surprises people. Plenty of cars at this rate start to sound busy above 100 km/h and feel unhappy about being asked for more. The Coolray sits at 120 with the engine barely raising its voice, and there is enough left in reserve to pass a lorry on a two-lane road without planning the manoeuvre a kilometre ahead. It is front-wheel drive, which is all any road car here needs, but it also means soft sand is off the table no matter how tall the car looks parked.

The gearbox deserves a straight answer. A 7-speed dual-clutch is quick and smooth once you are rolling, and at walking pace it can pause for a beat before it takes up drive, usually when you are creeping toward a busy junction. That is how the type behaves rather than a fault. Most renters stop noticing within a day or two. If you already know it irritates you, tell us when you book and we will bring a car with a conventional automatic instead.

Two practical notes for the highway weeks. Every hire includes 300 km a day and extra kilometres cost AED 0.5 each, which is generous for city use but worth counting if you are doing Abu Dhabi and back in a day. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are billed to you, so it is worth knowing which gates your daily route crosses.

What the air conditioning is up against

Any car left in an open car park through a Dubai afternoon is unpleasant for the first minute, and this one is no different. The advantage is simply that there is not much cabin to cool. Open the windows for the first thirty seconds as you pull away, then shut them, set the fan high and switch to recirculate. You will be comfortable in roughly five minutes rather than a quarter of an hour.

Rear vents are fitted, which is the detail that matters if a child seat is going in the back between June and September. Children under four need one by law and we can fit it before delivery.

This is capable air conditioning for the money rather than a luxury climate system, so shade is still your friend, and a windscreen shade pays for itself in a week if the car sits outside all day. The cabin around it flatters the rate. A large central touchscreen, digital instruments and soft materials in the places cheaper cars leave hard and shiny.

Book it, or don't

Rent the Coolray if your Dubai week involves parking in places that were not designed for modern cars, and you still want the height, the view and an engine with something in hand. It is the car we hand over most often to residents in older buildings and to visitors who found their last rental too wide for the basement. We rent to drivers from 18, which most desks in the city will not do.

Choose something else if you are collecting four adults and their luggage from the airport, in which case a sedan or a mid-size crossover settles it on boot space alone. Choose a proper four-wheel drive if a weekend in the dunes is on the plan, because this is not that car and no all-wheel-drive version is sold here. For everyone else, the Coolray is the small SUV that gives up the least to be this easy to park.
