Most Coolray bookings on our desk are long ones. Four weeks or more, usually someone new in the country waiting on a visa before they buy their own car, driving to work every morning and doing the supermarket run at night. When you rent a Geely Coolray 2024 in Dubai for a stretch like that, the daily rate stops being the number that decides things and the fuel bill takes over. The Coolray does well there. It is a turbocharged crossover quick enough to enjoy and cheap enough to feed that a month of commuting barely shows up. We deliver in one to two hours. The catch is the boot, and we will come to it.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Economy SUV, subcompact crossover |
| Seats | 5 |
| Engine | 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol |
| Power | 174 hp |
| Torque | 290 Nm |
| Transmission | 7-speed dual-clutch automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Fuel economy | 6.5 L/100km combined |
| Fuel tank | 45 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4380 x 1810 x 1615 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2600 mm |
| Ground clearance | 180 mm |
| Boot | 330 litres |
Geely's combined figure is 6.5 L/100km. You will not see that here. Real Dubai driving, with the air conditioning working hard from May onward and a turbo that responds to a heavy right foot, lands nearer 8 L/100km in mixed city use. Off the 45-litre tank, call it around 550 km of genuine range.
For a normal commute of 30 or 40 km a day plus evening errands, that is one fill every week and a half. Two fills in a month, from a car making 174 hp. That is the part that surprises people who assume a turbo will punish them at the pump.
Mileage is unlikely to bite you either. Every hire includes 300 km a day and extra kilometres are AED 0.5 each, and an ordinary city week does not come close to the allowance. The trip worth planning around is Abu Dhabi and back in a single day, which sits right on 300 km before you have driven anywhere at the other end.
Salik is the cost people forget. Tolls during your rental are charged to you, so if your route to work crosses gates in both directions five days a week, spend two minutes on the map before you settle into a habit. RTA fines during the hire pass to the renter as well, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit before we hand the car over.
The boot is this car's honest weakness. 330 litres is small for something this size, and it is the one thing that should make you pause before booking.
For a long-stay commuter it rarely matters. A full weekly shop fits. A pushchair fits with room left for the bags that come with it. One large hard case plus a soft holdall fits, which covers most single arrivals and most couples travelling light. Golf clubs go in with the rear bench dropped, and the 60:40 split means you can still carry a passenger while you do it.
What does not work is four adults arriving with four check-in cases. No amount of clever loading fixes that, and if that is your week, take a bigger car.
The back seat is better than the boot suggests. Two adults sit properly on the 2600 mm wheelbase. Three across is a cross-town seat rather than a road-trip one. Up front there is real space, headroom included, which is not always true of small crossovers.
Parking is where the compact footprint pays you back. At 4380 mm long the Coolray drops into the narrow bays in older residential towers without the three-point shuffle a mid-size SUV needs, and 180 mm of ground clearance takes Dubai's speed bumps and the steeper mall ramps without any scraping. That is the extent of it, though. This is front-wheel drive, and no all-wheel-drive Coolray has been sold here, so a weekend on soft sand is out regardless of how tall the car looks parked.
Nothing left outside in a Dubai August is pleasant when you open the door, and the Coolray is no exception. What works in its favour is volume. There is not much air in a cabin this size, so the system has less to fight than it would in a seven-seater.
The routine that helps is simple. Drop the windows for the first half minute as you pull out, then close up, put the fan on high and switch to recirculate. Comfortable in about five minutes rather than fifteen. There are rear vents, which is the detail that decides things if you are putting a child seat back there between June and September.
This is competent air conditioning for the money and not a luxury climate system, so park in shade where you can find it. If the car sits in an open work car park all day, a windscreen sunshade earns its cost in the first week.
The cabin itself flatters the rate. Large central touchscreen, digital instruments, soft materials in the places cheaper rivals leave hard and shiny. On a four-week hire that counts for more than a spec sheet suggests.
Rent the Coolray if you are one or two people who want a car that is cheap to run and still genuinely quick, and if your week is commuting and errands with the odd highway stint thrown in. It sits at 120 on the E11 without sounding like it is working for it, and we will hand it over from age 18, which most Dubai desks will not do.
Book something else in three situations. Four adults with airport luggage should take a sedan or a mid-size SUV, because the boot settles that argument before you get to any other question. Anyone planning a weekend in the dunes needs a proper four-wheel drive. And if your day is mostly crawling traffic and you notice how a dual-clutch gearbox behaves at walking pace, be aware that this one hesitates for a beat before it takes up drive when you creep forward. That is normal for the type, most renters stop noticing by day two, and a few never stop noticing. Say so when you book and we will bring you something with a conventional automatic instead.
For everyone else on a long hire, this is the small SUV that costs the least to live with while feeling like it should cost more.
