Rent Geely Coolray 2024 in Dubai

The decision most people are really making when they book a Geely Coolray 2024 in Dubai isn't crossover versus hatchback. It's Coolray versus an MG ZS or a Haval Jolion, because we rent all three at similar money and on a listing page they look interchangeable. They aren't. We can have any of them at your door in one to two hours, so the choice is worth two minutes of thought before you tap book. The short answer: the Coolray is the quickest of the three and the nicest place to sit, and in exchange it asks you to live with a gearbox that isn't at its best in crawling traffic.

Coolray, ZS or Jolion

All three are five-seat, front-wheel-drive crossovers built to a price, and all three do the same core job of putting you higher than a sedan without costing SUV money. What separates them is temperament.

The Coolray is the fast one. Its 1.5-litre turbo makes 174 hp and 290 Nm through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, which in a car this small is genuinely quick rather than adequate. Merging onto the E11 at speed, or pulling out to pass a lorry on a two-lane stretch, is a decision you make rather than one you plan for. Most cars renting at this rate start to sound busy above 100 km/h. This one is still relaxed at 120.

The Jolion is the bigger, softer car with more rear legroom and a gentler turbo. The ZS is the plainer, simpler one, easier to recommend to someone who just wants uncomplicated transport. If your week is mostly the school run and the mall car park, honestly, all three will do. If it includes daily highway distance or an Abu Dhabi commute, the Coolray is the one you'll be glad you picked.

The caveat is that dual-clutch gearbox. It's fast and smooth once you're rolling, but at walking pace, creeping toward a busy junction, it can hesitate for a beat before it takes up drive. It's a characteristic of the type rather than a fault, and most renters stop noticing by day two. If you know that low-speed shuffle bothers you, say so when you book and we'll point you at something with a conventional automatic instead.

None of the three is a desert car. All are front-wheel drive, so soft sand is out regardless of how tall they look.

What actually fits

This is where the Coolray asks something of you. The boot holds 330 litres, which is small for the class and the single biggest reason to look at something else.

In practice that's one large hard case plus a soft bag, or a full week's groceries for two, or a pushchair and the associated bits. Two people flying into DXB with a check-in case each will fit, with the second case sitting slightly proud and the parcel shelf left in the boot. Four adults arriving with four cases will not, and no amount of clever loading changes that. Fold the 60:40 rear bench and you get a properly useful flat space for flat-pack furniture or sports kit, but then you're a two-seater.

Up front there's real room, including for a tall driver. The back bench is fine for two adults or three kids, though three grown adults across it works for a run across town and gets old on the way to Abu Dhabi. Legroom back there is average rather than generous, which is the trade you make for a car that parks this easily.

Living with it in Dubai

Parked in July sun, the Coolray bakes like everything else with windows. What helps is that the cabin is small, so there's less air for the AC to fight. Drop the windows for the first half minute to dump the worst of the trapped heat, then run the fan hard, and the front vents have it comfortable in around five minutes. There are rear vents too, which matters if you're putting kids back there in August.

At 4380 mm long it's short enough for the tight bays in older Marina towers and the awkward corner spaces in mall basements, where a mid-size crossover needs the three-point shuffle. The 180 mm of ground clearance is the quiet win. Dubai's residential speed bumps are aggressive and some mall ramps are steeper than they look, and the Coolray clears both without the wince you get in a low hatch. You still slow down for the worst of them. You just aren't braced for contact.

Inside, it feels more expensive than the rate suggests, with a large central touchscreen, digital instruments and soft-touch material where rivals give you scratchy plastic.

On running costs, 6.5 L/100km is the official combined figure. Real Dubai driving, with the AC working and a turbo that rewards a heavy foot, lands nearer 8 in mixed city use, so call it around 550 km of real range from the 45-litre tank. That's one fuel stop in a normal week. Your rental includes 300 km a day, with extra kilometres at AED 0.5 each, which covers ordinary city use comfortably and is worth watching if you're doing Abu Dhabi and back regularly. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are charged to you, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit before delivery.

The call

Rent the Coolray if you want the quickest and best-finished of the cheap crossovers, and your luggage is two people's worth rather than four. It's the one to pick if your week has real highway distance in it, and we'll hand it over from age 18, which most Dubai desks won't do.

Pick the Jolion instead if rear legroom and boot space matter more to you than pace, or if you're carrying four adults with airport cases. Pick the ZS if you want the simplest, least fussy option and don't care about the turbo. And if your Dubai week is nothing but stop-and-go traffic and you're sensitive to a dual-clutch's low-speed manners, take a car with a torque-converter automatic and spend the difference on fuel. For everyone else, this is the small SUV that flatters the money you're spending on it.
