Behind it sits a 7-speed dual clutch rather than a torque converter. That is a genuine thing to know before you set off. It is sharp and decisive once you are rolling, and slightly hesitant off the line in stop-start crawling. You notice it in the first ten minutes and stop thinking about it after an hour.

Around 160 mm of clearance handles speed bumps and mall ramps at a sensible pace. It is a front-wheel drive road car, so soft sand and unsealed desert tracks are not its job, whatever the raised stance suggests. Parking is one of its easier tricks: at 4.41 metres long and under 1.9 wide it fits the older Marina basements, and the high seating makes the corners easy to place.

Cabin cooling in July follows the same physics as every car in this class. The first minute after a midday park is unpleasant. The cabin is small, though, so there is not much air to shift, and once you are moving with the fan up the front vents are doing real work within two or three minutes and it is properly cold by ten. Idling in a car park is much slower going. A windscreen shade is worth the trouble.
