The GAC GS3 Emzoom 2025 lands in the gap most Dubai renters actually live in. It has SUV height and a proper turbo engine, but it is small enough that a tight multi-storey stops being an event. We rent it right across Dubai to drivers from 18, which most desks in this city still won't do. At 4.41 metres it is shorter than a Corolla, and that one fact shapes the whole week you'll have with it. Our position is that the size, not the rate and not the badge, is the reason to take this car. Two people doing city loops with the odd highway run will get on with it. Four adults with airport cases won't.

The dimensions that decide your week

Most compact SUVs sold here have crept up in length until they park like saloons. The Emzoom hasn't. At 4,410 mm long and 1,600 mm tall, so it slides into the older bays around the Marina towers and the narrower mall decks without the three-point shuffle that a Tucson or a Sportage needs. You sit high enough to see over the traffic, low enough that the roof never worries a height barrier.

Width is the one number to keep an eye on. At 1,850 mm the Emzoom is not a narrow car, and in a genuinely mean bay you'll be folding the mirrors and thinking about your door swing. That is the trade for a cabin that doesn't feel pinched. The 2,650 mm wheelbase does real work here, because two adults can sit behind two adults without anyone negotiating over seat position. Three across the back is a school run, not a road trip.

Then the boot, which is where honesty matters more than enthusiasm. 341 litres is average for the class and modest in the absolute. A couple flying into DXB with a large case each and cabin bags will fill it to the parcel shelf and lose the rear view. A week of shopping, a pushchair and a couple of soft bags disappear into it without thought. Drop the rear bench and you get close to 1,271 litres, which handles a flat-pack run as long as nobody needs the back seat. Around 160 mm of clearance, a figure the UAE listings agree on rather than one GAC publishes, is enough for Dubai's harder speed bumps and the steeper mall ramps taken sensibly. It is a front-wheel-drive road car, so soft sand is somebody else's job.

How it behaves once the road opens up

A small SUV that parks easily often pays for it on Sheikh Zayed Road, where you find yourself planning overtakes two junctions ahead. The Emzoom doesn't have that problem. There is 270 Nm on tap from 1,400 rpm, which is the part of the rev range you actually use merging onto the E11, and the turbo pulls hard enough that slip roads and lane changes at 100 to 120 never turn into a project. It is not running out of breath at the national limit the way a small city hatch does.

The gearbox deserves a paragraph, and it also happens to answer the question renters really ask about an unfamiliar Chinese badge. Forget the logo for a moment. Over seven days, the things a famous badge buys you, dealer coverage and resale, never come up. What does come up is whether the car does anything odd in the first hour, and the Emzoom has exactly one habit worth knowing in advance. This is a 7-speed dual clutch, not a torque converter. Rolling, it is crisp and decisive and holds gears sensibly. From a dead stop in crawling traffic it can take a beat to commit, so leave a little more space at a junction than instinct suggests. You notice it before lunch and you have stopped noticing it by dinner.

Fuel is a non-event. GAC claims 18.3 km/L, roughly 5.5 L/100 km, and that is a lab figure. With the AC working and Dubai traffic doing what it does, plan on 7 to 8 L/100 km, which turns the 47-litre tank into about 600 km of real range. One stop at the pump in a normal week. Your allowance is 300 km a day with anything beyond it at AED 0.5 per kilometre, so only a Hatta day or a coastal run brings it into play.

Summer, and what the cabin does about it

Come back to a car that has been sitting in an open car park in July and nothing is comfortable for the first minute. The Emzoom recovers faster than a larger SUV simply because there is less air to chill, and the front vents are doing serious work within two or three minutes of driving off. Idling in the bay with the engine running is slower, which is true of every car at this rate. A folding windscreen shade costs almost nothing and saves you that first minute every time.

Two Dubai rules that catch people out. Salik tolls and any RTA fine incurred during the rental are charged to you, not to us. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and a child under four legally needs a child seat, which we will fit before delivery if you ask.

Our verdict

Rent the GAC GS3 Emzoom 2025 if you want the raised seating position and the highway punch of an SUV, but you spend most of your week threading through car parks, U-turns and school gates where a bigger car costs you patience. For a couple, a solo driver or a small family, the balance is close to ideal, and the turbo means you never feel like you compromised for the sake of parking.

Size up if your week starts with four adults and four full suitcases at the airport. The back seat can take them, the boot can't, and finding that out in the DXB car park is nobody's idea of a good start. Look elsewhere too if pure stop-start commuting is your entire rental, because a car with a conventional torque converter automatic will feel smoother in a two-hour crawl. For everyone in between, this is a small SUV that gives up almost nothing for being small.
