GAC Emkoo 2024 - start from 196 AED / day

Most renters in Dubai have never heard of GAC, and that is exactly what makes the GAC Emkoo 2024 worth a second look for a week in the city. It is a Chinese-built crossover that only landed in the UAE recently, and the unfamiliar badge is the one thing standing between it and a busier rental fleet. Pop the bonnet and you find a proper turbocharged engine driving through a quick dual-clutch automatic, not the tired naturally aspirated unit most cars near this rate carry. We bring it to your door within one to two hours of booking, and debit cards or cash both work at handover. This page settles one thing: whether the badge gap is worth what you save, or whether you would rather pay more for a name you already know.

What you get for the money

GAC sells the Emkoo in the UAE with a single engine and gearbox: a 1.5-litre turbo four making 177 hp and 270 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. That is meaningfully more power than the naturally aspirated 1.5s and 1.6s that fill this price band, and it shows the moment you pull onto a slip road. The DCT swaps gears quickly and doesn't hunt the way a CVT does under load, so the car feels more alert than its rate suggests.

The trade is the badge itself. GAC has one dealer network here, parts and service history are thinner than Hyundai or Nissan can offer, and resale confidence is still being built. None of that affects a week's rental, but it is the honest reason a car with this much engine and this much kit costs less to book than a Tucson or a Sportage. You are paying for the hardware, not the name on the boot lid.

Space, boot and the family week

At 4.68 metres long with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, the Emkoo sits at the longer end of its class, and that length goes into the back seat rather than the styling. Two adults have real legroom on a highway trip, and three fit across for a short mall or school run without anyone's knees in the front seatback. The boot holds around 450 litres, enough for one large case and a couple of soft bags, so two people flying into DXB or DWC for a week can load up without leaving anything behind. A family of four with a full set of luggage will want to fold part of the rear bench.

Where the length helps the cabin, the width asks a little more of you at the wheel. At 1,901 mm across, the Emkoo is wider than most compact crossovers, and it wants a proper look before you commit to a tight Marina tower bay or an old multi-storey column. The 160 mm ground clearance handles speed bumps and mall ramps without drama, but it is front-wheel drive on street tyres. Treat it as a city and highway car, not something you point at a Hatta track.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

GAC quotes combined economy of around 6.4 L/100km for the 1.5T, which is respectable for a turbocharged crossover with this much output. Dubai driving is harder on any car than a lab test, and with the AC working through a July afternoon and stop-start traffic on top, expect closer to 9 or 10 L/100km in real use. The 55-litre tank still gives a comfortable 550 to 600 km between fills at that rate, so a week of city errands and one or two longer runs needs no more than a couple of stops.

The rental terms are worth reading before you book. This car comes with 250 km of daily mileage, and anything past that runs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, so a day trip beyond the city is worth a quick calculation first. The minimum age to rent it is 25. Salik tolls charge automatically as you pass a gate and land on your bill, and any RTA fine picked up during the rental is yours too, not ours. On the cabin itself, we can vouch for the front vents pulling a baked interior down to comfortable within a few minutes of setting off, which matters when the car has sat in an open lot at midday. It is not a luxury climate system, and turbo power at idle does not change how fast a compressor works, so give it those first couple of minutes before you judge it.

Who should rent it, and who should pay up for a mainstream badge

Rent the Emkoo if you want more engine and a sharper automatic than a typical economy crossover offers, and the GAC badge itself does not bother you. Two adults, a week of city driving, mall runs and an airport pickup or two, the Emkoo covers that comfortably and leaves some performance in reserve for Sheikh Zayed Road overtakes that a 100 hp rival would struggle with.

Pay up for a Tucson, Sportage or Creta instead if brand familiarity matters to you, if you want a car you have driven or serviced before, or if you are carrying four adults with a full week's luggage and need the extra boot depth those rivals offer. Neither choice is wrong. The Emkoo simply asks you to trust the hardware over the badge, and for a city week in Dubai, the hardware holds up its end.
