The GAC Emkoo 2023 doesn't sit in its class quietly. Most economy SUVs in this price band are boxy and forgettable, but the Emkoo slopes its roofline back like a coupe, drops the rear glass low, and in Silver it photographs like a car worth more than its rate suggests. GAC is still a new badge on Dubai roads, so that shape is doing real work: it gets a second look from renters who've never heard the name. The engine, and how it drives

Under that sloped bonnet is a 1.5-litre turbo four making 177 hp and 270 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. That's a proper turbo, not the tired naturally aspirated 1.5 or 1.6 that most cars at this rate carry, and it shows the moment you merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road. Zero to 100 km/h takes around 10 seconds, and the DCT swaps gears cleanly under load instead of hunting the way a CVT does, so overtaking at 120 doesn't need a run-up.

The trade-off is familiarity. GAC has one dealer network here, and parts, service history and resale confidence are all thinner than a Hyundai or Kia can offer. None of that touches a week's rental, but it's the honest reason a car with this much engine costs less to book than a Tucson. You're renting the hardware, not the name.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

The coupe roofline that makes the Emkoo photograph well does cost it something in the back. Rear headroom is a little tighter than a squarer SUV of the same length, and a tall adult in the outer seats will notice the headliner curving in sooner than in a Sportage or Tucson. Legroom is fine, though: the 2,750 mm wheelbase gives two adults real space for a highway trip, and a third across the middle works for a short mall run, less so for a full day with three grown adults in the back.

The boot holds around 450 litres, enough for one large case and a soft bag, which covers two people flying into DXB or DWC for a week. A family of four with a full set of luggage will want to fold part of the rear bench rather than force everything into the boot. At 1,901 mm wide, the Emkoo asks for a proper look before you commit to a tight Marina tower bay, and the 160 mm ground clearance handles speed bumps and mall ramps without drama. It's front-wheel drive on street tyres, so treat it as a city and highway car, not something you point at a Hatta track.

GAC quotes combined economy of around 6.4 L/100km for the 1.5T, respectable for a turbocharged crossover with this much output on paper. Real Dubai driving, AC running through a July afternoon and stop-start traffic on top, pushes that closer to 9 or 10 L/100km. The 55-litre tank still gives 550 km or more between fills at that rate, so a week of city errands and one or two longer runs needs no more than a couple of stops.

Read the terms before you book. This car comes with 250 km of daily mileage, and anything past that runs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, worth a quick sum before a day trip out of the city. The minimum age to rent it is 25. Salik tolls charge automatically as you pass a gate and land on your bill, and any RTA fine picked up during the rental is yours, not ours. On the cabin, the lower, more raked rear glass means a parked Emkoo bakes a touch faster at midday than a taller, boxier SUV, but the front vents pull it back down to comfortable within a few minutes of setting off. It isn't a luxury climate system, and a turbo engine at idle doesn't make a compressor work any faster, so give it those first couple of minutes before you judge it.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Emkoo if the shape is part of the appeal and you want more engine than a typical economy SUV offers. Two adults, a week of city driving, mall runs and an airport pickup or two, the car covers that comfortably and leaves power in reserve for overtakes that a 100 hp rival would struggle with. If the unfamiliar badge doesn't bother you, this is one of the more entertaining automatics in its price bracket.

Look elsewhere if you regularly carry three adults across the back seat, need maximum rear headroom, or want the service history and resale confidence of a Tucson, Sportage or Creta. The same goes if you're chasing desert or Hatta capability: this is a front-wheel-drive city car under a coupe-SUV shape, not an off-roader. For a Dubai week built around streets and highways rather than tracks, the Emkoo's styling is backed by a genuinely quick engine, and that combination is hard to find at this rate.
