What you're actually renting

The Maverick is a unibody crew-cab pickup, not a body-on-frame workhorse. That distinction matters in daily Dubai use. It rides and steers more like a tall hatchback than a truck, so the school run, the supermarket, and Sheikh Zayed Road all feel normal rather than like a chore.

Under the bonnet is the 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbo four, 250 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic driving the front wheels. That's a genuinely quick engine for a small truck. Merging onto the E11 or overtaking on a single-carriageway run to Hatta, you've got more than enough in reserve, and it'll sit at the speed-camera limit all day without straining.

The bed: what fits and what doesn't

The Maverick's draw is the open bed, and at 4.5 feet it's short for a pickup but long enough to be useful. Drop the tailgate and you'll take a fridge-freezer, a flat-pack wardrobe, two mountain bikes upright, or a week's worth of moving boxes you'd never get into a sedan boot. Garden waste, building offcuts, a sandy paddleboard you don't want in the cabin, all of it goes in the back and hoses out after.

Be realistic about the limits, though. This isn't a one-tonne builder's truck. A full pallet won't fit between the wheel arches, and long timber or pipe will hang over the tailgate. If you're moving a whole apartment in one go, or hauling heavy site materials all week, size up to a full-size pickup. For the occasional haul, a dump run, a furniture pickup, a desert camping kit, the Maverick is the easier vehicle to live with the other six days.

Five seats, but mind the back row

There are five seats and the front two are properly comfortable, with a high, commanding view that suits Dubai's big junctions. The rear bench is where the compact part shows. It's fine for kids or for two adults on a short hop across town, but legroom back there is tight for a long airport transfer with tall passengers. If carrying four adults in comfort is your main job and the bed is an afterthought, a mid-size SUV will treat your back-seat passengers better.

Heat, AC and the parked-cabin problem

A dark cabin baking in a summer car park climbs past 60°C, and the Maverick's air conditioning handles it sensibly rather than spectacularly. Start it, point the front vents up, give it three or four minutes with the doors briefly open, and the cabin pulls down to comfortable before you've cleared the first roundabout. There are rear vents to keep back-seat passengers in the airflow. It cools a five-seat cabin honestly; it won't match a luxury crossover's chilled-in-seconds climate system, but for a working truck it's more than adequate at 45°C.

Parking, Salik and the running costs

This is where a compact pickup earns its keep over a real truck. At just over five metres it's longer than a hatchback, so mall multi-storey bays and tight Marina ramps need a little care, but it tucks into a standard space where a full-size pickup simply won't go. The reversing camera does the heavy lifting; the 218 mm of ground clearance clears speed bumps and raised car-park entries without scraping.

On fuel, expect around 9 L/100km in mixed city and highway driving, which gives roughly 680 km from the 62-litre tank. On a typical week you're filling up once, maybe twice if you're crossing the city daily. A couple of housekeeping points: Salik tolls run on your account, so the gantries on Sheikh Zayed Road and the bridges add up across a busy week, and any RTA fines pass to you as the renter. Belt up in every seat, front and back, and that's the admin done.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Maverick if you want car-like driving most of the time and a real cargo bed some of the time: people moving house in stages, weekend campers and bikers, anyone with the occasional bulky pickup who doesn't want to park a full truck at the mall. It's quick, easy to place in traffic, and cheap to run for what it carries.

Skip it if your job is heavy, all-week hauling or you regularly carry four adults far. For serious loads, take a full-size pickup. For passenger comfort with the odd boot-load, take an SUV.
