A Ford Explorer 2021 in Dubai is the answer when four adults and a stack of luggage stop fitting in anything smaller. This is a genuine three-row American SUV, not a compact crossover wearing a badge, and it rents here with the same doorstep delivery most of the fleet gets, usually inside one to two hours of booking. The argument for it is simple: if your week involves a full car, whether that is a family flying into DXB with six bags or three couples splitting one vehicle for a week of desert dinners and mall runs, the Explorer earns its size. The engine, and how it drives

Once it settles into a cruising gear on the open road, the turbo four has enough shove to overtake without drama and holds 120 km/h without feeling stressed.

This is a rear-drive-based SUV. Ford also builds the Explorer with four-wheel drive in this market, but the base configuration underneath this class of rental is RWD, and we are not going to promise grip this car cannot confirm it has. Treat it as a capable road car, not a desert vehicle. It rides high enough to handle Dubai's ordinary rough patches and sits well above a sedan, but this is not the car for Hatta tracks. If dune bashing or off-road work is the plan, book something built and badged for that.

Three rows, and what fits behind them

Seven seats across three rows is the whole reason to book this over a five-seat crossover. The middle row is where adults actually want to sit, with real leg room and a proper door opening for getting in without folding yourself in half. The third row is smaller, as it is in almost every SUV this size, and it suits kids or shorter adults on a shopping trip rather than three grown men on the drive out to Fujairah.

Boot space tells the same story in numbers. With all three rows up you get 515 litres, enough for a full airport run's worth of cases with the third row occupied, though it is tighter than that figure suggests once two or three people are actually sitting back there. Fold the third row down and it jumps past 1,300 litres, which is where this car changes character entirely, four adults up front and in the middle, and a boot that swallows a full family's holiday luggage without anyone compromising. That is the trade to plan around: seven people with light bags, or four to five people with everything they own for the week.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

At around 8.5 litres per 100 km and a 72-litre tank, expect roughly 800 to 850 km of real-world range before a fill-up, which comfortably covers a week of city driving with an airport run or two thrown in. It drinks more than a compact sedan, which is the honest cost of the extra size and the two extra seats.

The cabin is where the Explorer earns its keep in summer. It is a big volume of air to cool, so climbing back into a car left in direct sun for a few hours takes longer to feel comfortable than it does in a small hatchback, particularly in the third row, which gets the weakest airflow of the three rows. Front occupants feel relief fast once the AC is running. Give it a couple of minutes with all doors open before you load everyone in on a 45-degree afternoon, and park in shade at the mall or the villa where you can. Size down if it is one or two people, or if your trip is mostly city errands and mall parking.
