The decision with the Exeed TXL 2024 is not whether it is a good car for the week. It is whether you want 4,780 mm of midsize SUV in Dubai's tighter car parks in return for the space and quiet that come with it. We rent the TXL across Dubai and hand it over from age 18, three years earlier than most desks here will give anyone a car this size. Get the size question right and everything else about this car falls into place easily. Get it wrong and you will spend the week reversing out of bays you should never have driven into.

Parking a car this long, and where it stops being fun

The numbers first, because they decide it. 4,780 mm long, 1,885 wide, 1,730 tall, on a 2,800 mm wheelbase. That is a full midsize SUV rather than the compact crossover most people picture when they book something in this bracket. The extra length is all in the wheelbase, which is why the back seat is so good and why a tight multi-storey level asks for one clean reverse rather than three attempts.

Where you notice it is the older car parks and the narrow tower bays in the Marina, where the pillar eats half your door swing. Nothing about the car makes that harder than it needs to be. The steering is light, the camera is clear, and the turning circle is normal for the class. You just have to look at a bay before you commit to it, which is not a habit everyone brings to a rental.

Ground clearance is 200 mm and that is the number that quietly saves you. Dubai's speed bumps are unusually severe in the residential blocks, and the ramps at some of the older malls are steep enough to scrape a low sedan on the way in. The TXL clears both without you slowing to walking pace or thinking about it at all.

What it does at 120, and what it will not do

On the E11 the TXL is doing the job it was designed for. It sits quietly at 120, tracks straight, and holds enough in reserve that an overtake is a decision rather than a project. An hour to Abu Dhabi passes without the drone and fidget you get from smaller cars pushed to the same speed.

The gearbox is a seven speed dual clutch and it behaves the way dual clutches do. Smooth and unobtrusive once you are rolling, very slightly hesitant on a crawling start when the traffic on Al Khail is stop and go. It is worth knowing so you do not read it as a fault on day one.

The 1.6 turbo car drives its front wheels. All-wheel drive is offered on the TXL, but it comes attached to the larger 2.0 engine rather than this one, so ask us what is on your booking if it genuinely matters. Treat it as a road car regardless. It is planted on a wet underpass and fine on a graded track out towards Hatta, but soft sand needs a proper 4x4 with low range, and ride height alone has never got anyone out of a dune.

Fuel works out kindly. The 55 litre tank and a combined figure around 11 to 13 km/L put real range in the 600s, so a normal week of city driving and one longer run is a single stop at the pump. The rate includes 300 km a day with extra kilometres at AED 0.5, which no amount of city driving will trouble. Salik deducts automatically at the gantries and comes to you as the renter, as does any RTA fine picked up during the rental.

The first ten minutes in August

A car left on an open mall roof for three hours in summer is unpleasant to get into, and no brochure prepares anyone for it. The TXL's air conditioning is genuinely strong and pulls a hot cabin down fast, but the panoramic glass roof these cars usually carry works against it for the first few minutes. Drop all four windows for the drive out of the car park, let the trapped air go, then close up and let the system do its work.

There are rear vents, which is the detail that decides whether anyone in the back is comfortable by the second set of lights. Park in shade when you have the choice, and in July that is worth a two minute walk.

Our verdict on the TXL

Rent the Exeed TXL 2024 if you want a big, quiet, well finished five seat SUV for a week and you are relaxed about parking something this long. Couples, families of four, anyone doing airport transfers and highway miles rather than darting between old-town side streets: this is a lot of car for the rate, and the interior is better than the badge suggests.

Choose differently if your week is mostly tight multi-storey parking and short hops, where a compact crossover will annoy you less every single day. Choose differently again if you need a third row, or if the plan involves sand, because neither the seat count nor the drivetrain is going to change to suit you.
