Exeed Txl 2024 - start from 258 AED / day

Four people land at DXB with a week booked, two large cases, two soft bags and a pushchair, and the question at the kerb is whether it all goes in without someone holding a bag on their lap. That is the job the Exeed TXL 2024 does well. We rent it across Dubai and can have it at your door, or waiting for you when you land, inside one to two hours. It is a five-seat midsize SUV from Chery's upmarket badge, and the case for it over a week comes down to space and cabin quality per dirham rather than anything the badge does for you. One warning up front: this is a road SUV whatever the ride height suggests.

What fits in the back

450 litres with the rear seats up, and it is a usefully square 450 rather than a shallow letterbox. Two large hard cases stand upright side by side with room above and behind them for soft bags. Add a third big case and you are stacking, which works fine until someone needs the bag at the bottom. The rear bench splits and folds, so an IKEA run or a bike stops being a problem at all.

The honest limit is four adults plus four full-size cases. Almost nothing with five seats swallows that, and the TXL is no exception. If that is your normal airport load rather than your worst case, book a seven-seater and use the third row for luggage.

Five seats, and the July problem

The 2,800 mm wheelbase is long for a midsize SUV, so the back seat is sized for adults rather than for children who happen to be adults' relatives. Three across the bench for a short hop across town is fine. Three across on a run out to Hatta and back asks a lot of whoever draws the middle, as it does in any car this width.

Summer is the part worth planning around. Dubai afternoons push past 45 degrees, and a car that has spent three hours on an open mall roof is an oven when you open the door. The air conditioning is strong and pulls the cabin down quickly once it is running, though the panoramic glass roof these cars usually carry works against you for the first few minutes. Drop the windows, let the hot air out, then close up and let it work. There are rear vents, which is the small detail that decides whether the kids in the back are comfortable or complaining by the first roundabout.

What a week of driving costs

The tank holds 55 litres and the combined figure sits around 11 to 13 km/L, which puts a realistic range somewhere in the 600s. A normal Dubai week of school runs, mall trips and one airport transfer is a single visit to the pump. Sit at 120 on the E11 and you will beat the brochure. Lean on the turbo from every set of lights and you will not, which is true of every turbo SUV and worth saying plainly rather than burying.

Two other running costs belong in the sum. Salik gantries deduct automatically as you pass and the tolls come to you as the renter, as does any RTA fine picked up during the rental. The rate includes 300 km a day with extra kilometres at AED 0.5, and for city use you will never think about that ceiling. If the plan involves Abu Dhabi and back more than once, do the arithmetic before you book.

Ramps, bays and which wheels are driving

At 4,780 mm long it parks like what it is, a full midsize SUV. Marina tower bays and the older multi-storey levels want a glance at the camera and a bit of patience, but nothing about it is awkward. Ground clearance of 200 mm is the more useful number day to day. Dubai's speed bumps are aggressive and the ramps at the older malls are steep, and the TXL clears both without the scrape a low sedan gives you.

The drivetrain is where assumptions go wrong. The 1.6 turbo car sends its power to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. All-wheel drive does exist on the TXL, but it arrives with the larger 2.0 engine rather than this one, so ask us what is on your booking if it genuinely matters to you. Either way, treat it as a road car. It is composed on a wet underpass after one of Dubai's rare downpours and fine on a graded track. Soft sand needs a proper 4x4 with low range, and a front-drive crossover on a dune is how a weekend ends with a recovery truck.

On Sheikh Zayed Road it does the thing you actually want from an SUV on an hour-long run. Quiet at 120, stable in the outside lane, and holding enough in reserve to overtake without planning it three cars ahead.

Who we would hand the keys to

Rent the Exeed TXL 2024 if you are a couple or a family of four who wants a big boot, a quiet cabin and a genuinely nice interior for the week, and would rather put the difference into the holiday than into a German badge. For airport transfers, mall runs and the occasional drive out of the city, it is one of the easiest cars at this rate to live with.

Skip it if you need three rows, if four adults with four large cases is your normal load rather than your worst case, or if the trip involves sand. A seven-seater fixes the first two. For the third you want a body-on-frame 4x4, and no amount of ground clearance changes that answer.
