Dongfeng Fengon iX5 2024 - start from 268 AED / day

Want the look of a coupe-styled crossover without the badge premium that usually comes with it? We rent the Dongfeng Fengon ix5 2024 across Dubai, and you can settle however suits you on delivery, card, cash, bank transfer, Apple Pay, Google Pay, even crypto, sorted at the door. That flexibility is the easy part. The harder question is whether a value-brand crossover with a sloping roofline is the right car for your week here, or whether the styling is doing more work than the engineering. This page is honest about both: what you get for the rate, and where an established small crossover earns the extra money.

What the Fengon ix5 actually is

The ix5 is a compact crossover with a coupe-style rear, a 1.5-litre engine making 137 horsepower, front-wheel drive and a five-seat cabin. On paper it reads bigger than a city hatch, and it is: at 4,685 mm long it sits in proper compact-SUV territory, not subcompact. What you're paying a low rate for is presence. The car looks more expensive than it rents for, and that's the whole pitch.

The trade-off lives in that roofline. A swept rear roof looks sharp in the Marina car park and costs you headroom in the back seats and a flatter, shorter boot opening. None of that matters if you're two people running around the city. It matters a lot if you're carrying tall adults in the back for a week.

Does my luggage fit

The boot is 347 litres, which is modest for a car this long. Two soft bags and a medium case go in fine. A weekly grocery run for a small family is no problem. Where you feel the coupe shape is loading anything tall or boxy: the sloped tailgate cuts into the upper space, so a hard suitcase standing upright eats more of the opening than the number suggests.

For an airport run, plan honestly. Two travellers with a large case each plus carry-ons will fill it, and you'll likely drop the rear seats for a third big case. If you're a family of four flying in with a week's worth of luggage, this is the point where I'd steer you to a conventional small SUV or a sedan with a deeper trunk. The ix5 carries a couple comfortably; it gets tight for four plus their cases.

Driving it in Dubai

With 137 horsepower pulling a car of this size, the ix5 is built for moving through the city, not chasing anything on Sheikh Zayed Road. Around town it's perfectly relaxed. Merge onto the E11 and it gets the job done, but overtaking at speed needs planning rather than a stab of the pedal. Treat it as a comfortable cruiser and it's fine for a DXB or DWC airport transfer and the daily commute. Ask it to feel quick and it won't.

The 58-litre tank is genuinely useful. On mixed city driving you can go most of a week between fills, and a single tank covers a Dubai-to-Abu-Dhabi round trip with room to spare. The 250 km included per day is plenty for normal city use; if you're doing long daily highway stints, watch the 1 AED per extra kilometre.

Ground clearance sits at a typical crossover height, taller than a hatch, so speed bumps and the steeper mall ramps around town are a non-issue. The car is 1,865 mm wide, which is on the broad side for tight multi-storey bays. Older Marina and downtown car parks with narrow spaces will have you taking the mirrors in and lining up your U-turns with a bit more care than a small hatchback needs.

Heat and the cabin

This is the test that matters in a Dubai summer, and it's where a value badge shows. The ix5 has a competent automatic AC that pulls a parked cabin down from the high 40s within a few minutes once you're moving, helped by the relatively large cabin volume taking the edge off radiant heat. It cools well rather than instantly. Park in shade when you can, crack the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the worst of the trapped heat, and you'll be comfortable on the move. Rear passengers get vents back there, which the people behind you will appreciate on a long, hot run.

The Dubai rules part

A few quick things every renter here should know. Salik tolls are billed to you, so every gantry you pass on Sheikh Zayed Road or the bridges goes on your account. Any RTA fine picked up during your rental passes to you as well, so the speed cameras are your problem, not ours. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can add if you ask.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Fengon ix5 if you want a crossover that looks a class above its rate, you're mostly driving in and around the city, and your typical load is two or three people with normal luggage. For that renter it's a lot of car and equipment for the money, and the flexible payment on delivery makes picking it up painless.

Look elsewhere if you regularly carry four adults, if rear-seat headroom or a big square boot is a deal-breaker, or if you want strong highway pull and a brand with a long service record behind it. In those cases an established small crossover like a Kia Seltos or Hyundai Creta costs a bit more to rent and gives you back rear space, resale-grade refinement and a little more confidence at speed. The ix5 is a smart budget choice for the right week. Just go in knowing it's a value brand wearing a sharp suit, not a premium car at a bargain price.
