Citroen builds this SUV around comfort first, and it shows the moment you pull away. A suspension the brand calls Progressive Hydraulic Cushions swaps the usual bump stops for hydraulic ones, so the sharp edges of Dubai's patched tarmac arrive rounded off instead of thumping through the cabin. That's the main reason to book the Citroen C5 2023 over a firmer, sportier crossover in the same price band. We hand it over at your door within one to two hours of booking. Sold here in the UAE simply as "C5," it's built on Citroen's C5 Aircross platform: five seats, front-wheel drive, a 1.6-litre turbo automatic. This page settles one thing: whether that cushioned ride earns a place over a stiffer mainstream SUV.
The 1.6-litre turbo four makes 165 hp and 240 Nm, sent through a 6-speed automatic to the front wheels. That's enough for confident merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road and clean overtakes with a bit of planning, not a car that snaps your head back. Most drivers won't mind. This is a comfort SUV, not a hot hatch in a raised body, and the numbers line up with that intent.
The suspension is the real story. Progressive Hydraulic Cushions add hydraulic stops at both ends of the wheel travel, so instead of a hard mechanical bump stop, the car slows the compression and rebound gradually. Over a rutted service road or a poorly patched section near a construction site, that difference is obvious within the first few minutes behind the wheel. The trade-off is body lean through a fast roundabout and steering that prioritizes ease over feedback. If you like your SUV to feel planted and eager in a corner, look elsewhere. If you'd rather arrive at your destination without your coffee sloshing, this is one of the more comfortable options in the class.

At 580 litres the boot beats most compact crossovers in this segment, and it's genuinely usable rather than a number on a spec sheet. A DXB or DWC pickup with two large cases and a couple of soft bags goes in without anyone folding a seat down. The rear bench isn't really a bench at all: it's three individual seats that each slide and recline on their own, so you can free up more boot room on a big supermarket run or spread three child seats out properly without anyone fighting over a shared cushion.
Front seat comfort matches the ride, with wide, well-cushioned chairs that suit long stretches on the motorway. The one thing to plan around is length. At 4.5 metres this sits a size up from a compact hatch-based crossover, so a tight Marina tower ramp or a cramped mall bay wants a slightly wider turning line. Ground clearance of 230 mm clears steep basement ramps and Dubai's taller speed bumps without the scraping some lower sedans suffer. Don't mistake that for off-road capability, though. It's front-wheel drive on road tyres, built for tarmac and gravel car parks, not soft sand or Hatta tracks.
Official combined economy sits at 6.8 litres per 100 km, and real Dubai driving with the AC working hard and traffic crawling in short bursts pushes that closer to 8 or 9. The 53-litre tank still covers roughly 600 km of typical city driving before you need to stop, which for most renters means one visit to the pump a week, maybe two if you're commuting in daily from the outer suburbs.
The mileage allowance on this car is 250 km a day, and anything beyond that costs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre. That's a workable allowance for city errands, school runs and the odd airport trip, though a long day trip out to Al Ain or the east coast is worth totting up in advance. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are on you, as with every car we hand over, and child seats are required for anyone under four.
Cabin cooling deserves an honest answer rather than a marketing one. The C5's front vents pull the temperature down quickly once you're moving, and rear passengers get their own vents rather than relying on what drifts back from the front, which matters in a cabin this size on a 45-degree afternoon. Climbing back into a car that's been baking in a car park is never pleasant in any vehicle here, so park in shade where you can and give the AC a couple of minutes before you load everyone in.
Rent the C5 2023 if a settled, quiet ride matters more to you than sharp handling or the smallest possible footprint. It suits couples and families doing real highway distance, regular airport runs with a full boot, and anyone who's driven a firm-riding crossover on Dubai's rougher stretches and wants something calmer. The individually sliding rear seats make it an easy choice for a week with young kids or a car full of luggage.
Look elsewhere if you want brisk acceleration, tighter body control through corners, or any hint of off-road ability, since this is a front-wheel-drive SUV built purely for tarmac. It's also worth noting the minimum age here is 25, a few years above what some rivals in the class ask for, so younger renters will need to check availability elsewhere. For everyone else prioritizing comfort over pace, the C5 remains one of the more relaxed SUVs we rent.
